- Description:
- Postcard (color, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled: George Washington Bridge N. Y.…over the Hudson River from Manhattan to the Palisades. The George Washington Bridge was twice as long as any previous suspension bridge. Othmar Ammann, a Swiss-born architect and engineer, proposed the bridge design in 1923. The Port Authority, with Ammann as chief engineer, began construction in October of 1927. The bridge has a 3,500-foot center span suspended between two 570-foot steel towers, and the strength to carry two levels of roadway or rail. The George Washington Bridge was first opened to traffic in 1931. This card is one of a series produced by R. H. Macy & Co., Inc. Text on reverse: The Macy Color Views of New York
