Description:
This document is a petition dated February 14, 1796 from the inhabitants of Montgomery County, Georgia to the Governor of Georgia (probably Jared Irwin, Governor of Georgia, 1796-1798) complaining of problems with Indians in the area. They allege that citizens have been forced to flee their homes and leave all their belongings for the Indians to take or destroy. They also assert that their defenseless position on the frontier inhibits new settlement, and they ask that the governor provide for a fort to be built nearby. They suggest John Ford's plantation on the Oconee River as a suitable location for the fort. The petition is signed by almost 30 individuals.
