Fort Jackson -- Georgia
July the 1st 1842
Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Excellencys letter of the 6th ult. [ultimo] relative to the Surender [Surrender] of Tustenuggee and his warriours [warriors], in reply to which I have to inform your Excellency that I do not think that it is him and his warriours [warriors] alone that visites [visits] our frounteer [frontier] as I do not [deleted text: think ] think that there is [added text: a ] warriour [warrior] that resides in Florida but what is well acquanted [acquainted] with this Section of country and frequently visits it. Since the Surrender of Tutenuggee and his warriours [warriors] there has been trails of Indians discovered leading on the direction for the Okefeenokee Swamp within a bout twenty five or thirty miles of the Georgia line. but did not continue into Georgia before they returned on the direction for the evrglades this I would think was evidence Sufficient to prove that it is [deleted text: nt ] not Tustenuggee and his warriours [warriors] alone that commits the depredations on the Georgia frounteer [frontier] and I am confident had [added text: it ] not been for the Scouts keept [kept] [added text: up ] by the troops ordred [ordered] into Service by your Excellency that they [added text: would ] of made another venture on our Georgia Settlements, as we frequently Scout fifteen or twenty miles in florida for the better Safety of the pople [people] of Georgia and I am certain that they discovered our Signs [deleted text: we ] what was the cause of their return
