- Letter to Brigadier General Elijah Clarke in Wilkes County, Georgia, from Benjamin Cleavland (also Cleveland, Cleaveland) dated October 19, 1788. Cleavland tells Clarke of recent alleged attacks and thefts by neighboring Indians. Cleavland suggests that the parties of Indians are Creek and Cherokee, but guesses that they are mostly Cherokees. He claims that more than twenty horses and supplies of seed were stolen, some livestock killed, and several whites injured in recent incidents. He requests assistance from General Clarke.

Dear Genl [General]
Sunday Oct 19th, 1788
After my Compliments Inform You that We Have been Greatly Distrest [Distressed] With the Savages Since You Left this part, On Thursday Morning. There Was A Discovery Made Where they Encamped Within Half Mile of -- Matterson Station that Same Night -- They Struck Up Camp Just By [illegible text] House On [unclear text: Chorstory ] Where They Collected About Twenty Two Horses But the people Missing there [their] Horses Went Out in ye Night & [unclear text: gave ] them A Surprise & Got Ninteen [Nineteen] of the Horses Back Again Friday Morn.) We pursued them But to No Effect -- Friday Night they past [passed] Over to the Georgia Side & Killed A Hog at Waltons fort & stole Some [unclear text: Seed ] that Was Left there to the Amt. [General] [unclear text: Martain ] Who Has Returned from the Western Waters was Up At Wards Mill & Sent Some of His Horses Out To Be [illegible text] The Indians At That Time Leing [Lying] Wait fired -- Upon them At the Same Time the Men Run Out from the Block House to there [their] Assistance & There Was A Small Ingaugment [Engagement] in Which We Had A Man Wounded in the Arm & Killed One Indian & Suppose They Wounded Another But Was forced to [unclear text: Repair ] to the Block House they Took of Two Very -- Valuable Horses from the General With A Number Of Other Valuable Horse from that Side of the River this Morning Every Man that Could possibly Be Raised from our Small Station pursued them Tis [It is] Computed that there is About Thirty of [unclear text: them ] Creeks & Cherokees
