~ Tips For Producing
Top Quality Tomatoes

By BOYCE DYER

Director of Markets
State Dept. of Agriculture

Through the effective control of insects
and diseases which attack tomatoes, it is
possible for farmers to increase their earn-
ings as much as seven or eight dollars per
bushel,

During the 1957 season, officials of the
State Department of Agriculture found
that the farmers who did a good job of

controlling insects and diseases in their

crops were able, even during adverse
weather conditions, to bring a Bet qual-
ity: tomato to the market.

Most of the insects and diseases of to-

matoes can be controlled by following the
regular spray schedule shown on this page

which was prepared by C. R. Jordan, Ex-

tension Entomologist and Cecil Blackwell,
Extension Horticulturist,

In using insecticides, a minimum tank
pressure of 200 to 250 pounds should be
used to break up the spray into a fine mist
in order to give good coverage which is
essential for disease control. .

Approximately 75 to 150 gallons of
spray per acre should be used. Dust con-
taining the insecticides and _ fungicides
listed in the schedule can be used but are
somewhat less effective than sprays.

In addition to the regular spray sched-
ule, the following suggestions are present-
ed as aids in producing a good quality to-
mato:

1. Follow a two to three year rotation
and avoid following pepper, eggplant,
Irish potatoes, tobacco, and peanuts.

2. FUSARIUM WILT: Use wilt resis-
tant varieties or practice longer rotation.
BACTERIAL WILT is more prevalent-in
low areas and such locations should be
avoided.

3. In NEMATODE infested fields ap-
ply soil fumigants before transplanting.

4. Use only certified seed or plants
(preferably home grown) to reduce like-
lihood of blights and other diseases. Dis-
card any lot of plants which shows symp-
