Most of the insects and diseases of to- matoes can be controlled by following the regular spray schedule shown on this page which was prepared by C. R. Jordan, Ex- tension Entomologist and Cecil Blackwell, Extension Horticulturist, In using insecticides, a minimum tank pressure of 200 to 250 pounds should be used to break up the spray into a fine mist in order to give good coverage which is essential for disease control. . Approximately 75 to 150 gallons of spray per acre should be used. Dust con- taining the insecticides and _ fungicides listed in the schedule can be used but are somewhat less effective than sprays. In addition to the regular spray sched- ule, the following suggestions are present- ed as aids in producing a good quality to- mato: 1. Follow a two to three year rotation and avoid following pepper, eggplant, Irish potatoes, tobacco, and peanuts. 2. FUSARIUM WILT: Use wilt resis- tant varieties or practice longer rotation. BACTERIAL WILT is more prevalent-in low areas and such locations should be avoided. 3. In NEMATODE infested fields ap- ply soil fumigants before transplanting. 4. Use only certified seed or plants (preferably home grown) to reduce like- lihood of blights and other diseases.
