addline 1 1-32 inch staple cotton, in New Or-
_feans.
_.. 358 points nied to New Noe Maree quot-
ation, amounted to 23.79 cents per pound.
On that day the best price of middling 1 1-32,
inch staple in New Orleans, to a farmer, was
20, 86 cents. | \

_ _Anderson-Clayton & Company, Ine., receiv-
- ed 293 points premium or $14.65 per bale more
than a farmer could get.

On this basis, and assuming that the same
-yatio held good for the entire 255,350 bales, An-
derson-Clayton & Company, Inc., received $3,-
485,527.50 more for this cotton than. the farmers
could have received for the same amount of the
same kind of cotton-on the same date.

You remember when the OPA set ceilings
on eotton goods and yarns, in the first instance.
These ceilings were based on the farmer feceiv-
ing 21.45 cents for middling cotton of 7-8 inch
staple at the farm. 21.45 cents at the farm was
_ Supposed to have given the farmer approximate-
ly 22 cents, for his cotton when hauled to town.
It would have given the farmer approximately:

dach staple. It would have given the farmer ap-
proximately 23 cents for strict middling cotton
with 15-16 inch staple.
~ Notwithstanding this elias fixed by OPA
on textiles and yarns, the farmer continued to
get, at that time, 18 and 19 cents per pound for
his cotton.
_ * You and I-know that a bale of cotton today.
Sad Mr. Wickards fake parity does not have any-
thing like the buying power that the same bale
of cotton had from 1910 to 1914.
: Tam perfectly willing to go along with you
on. any plan that will get the southern cotton
growers more money.
I would like to know how you are going to
5 control Boards and Bureaus who pay no atten-
tion to plain provisions of the-Law.
I would also like to know how much of the
cotton that was bought from Anderson-Clayton
Company, Inc., was cotton out of Commodity
Credit Corporations stock of ae which be-
: longed to the farmers. |
Sincerely yours,
TOM LINDER,
Commissioner of Aergulure
