FROM. THE COMMISSIONER

pee The Legislature aApnicned Sunday morning at 5 58. I was
hopeful the last hours of the session that we would be able to |

get the fertilizer bill through. Which provided that the fac- :

tories label on the sacks the exact number of pounds | of each
separate fertilizer material used and the exact number of

pounds of filler, worthless - as fertilizer and that the samples _ Z

be taken i in triplicate and a marked sample left with the Ordi-

ry of the County where the sample is drawn, and the other.

sample sent to the Chemist with only a number of identifica- >

tion. I was, and still am, of the opinion that. this fertilizer law
is fair; both to the dealers. in fertilizer and the farmers, and
it is important that the farmers should have it. I am also of |
the opinion, that it would be worth millions of dollars a year >

to the farmers in stopping the use of Tybee sand, Graymont -

| rock and cinders that are put into our fertilizer for no other
ee purpose than to make up the tonnage. This i is a foolish and an
expensive custom and should be stopped. The bill passed the
House 124 to 45, Those voting for the bill were as follows:
For the bill: Adams, of Newton; Adams of Putnam, Adams of
Walton, Andrews , Awtrey, Beatoai, Beck, - Bennett, Blease,

~The bill was then sent to the Senate for. coneurreric.

The Bill was finally reported out of the Agricultural Com-
mittee No. 1, with a recommendation that it do not pass, and
was then referred to the Rules Committee. The Rules Commit-
tee refused to put this important bill on the calendar. An aye
and nay vote was never had by the Senate on the strict merits
of the bill. There are two ways of killing a bill. One is to
kill it in the Committee room and never havea direct aye and
nay vote, and the other is to have the aye and nay vote and
Axil] it on its passage. I regret very much that this important
measure could not have been voted on directly. by the senate.
The other legislative measures passed, effecting the Depart-
ment of Agriculture were of a constructive nature as I out-
lined to you last week.- And taking it, allin all, the General
Assembly made a great step in re-organization of the Depart-
I dont know that we could
expect all reform measures to go through at one time. Con-
structive legislation always meets with great opposition. And_

Are Georgia farmers at. present capitalizing the full Pee |
of poultry raising in the state?

While green vegetables are perishable to some extent and the pro-
ducer stands the chance \of suffering some loss if a quick market is not
found for same, such is not the case with poultry products. Poultry
products ean be held over with safety and sometimes at a financial

ain.

: Hens, broilers, fryers, paceters are always in demand in town
and city markets and the supply seldom exceeds the demands, al-
though Tennessee and other states contribute ees in 1 supplying
_ Georgias demand. :

Many times the number of dicks could be sold as are supplied in
the retail markets-in the state, especially during the winter months.

City markets could not nearly supply the demand for turkeys during -

~ the late winter months of last year .
To give some idea of the vast amount of aoe products con-
sumed in the United States the Press Service Department of the Uni-
ted States Department of Agriculture gives out the following ae
mation: >
Tnereased cold storage stocks of poultry, butter and eggs on
. August Ist as compared with the sam date last year are reported
by the Bureau of Agricultural Economies, United piates Department
of Agriculture as foHows: ~~ v7
Total holdings of frozen poultry, including broilers, fryers, roos-
ters, turkeys and miscellaneous poultry are placed at 42,302,-
000 against 35,793,000 pounds August 1, 1926, and a five-year aver-
age of 38,973,000 pounds.
Holdings of creamery butter aggregated 145 ,146,000 pounds
e@ompared with 121, 152,000 last year, and stocks of ease eggs were.
10,737,000 cases against 9,845,000 on the same date a year: ago.

American cheese supplies are smaller with, 67,089,000 pounds com-_ 2

Mrs. Norman Sharpe,
Atlanta, Ga. |
Dear Madam: |
I have read in our local pier of what you have nono piaiga ian
helping the farm people. Can you help me get hold of some turkeys. :
I cant seem to find them in Kentucky; of course, its too late to set
now, but I thought possibly I could get some grown stock. My idea
was to have a turkey farm when I came on to this place, but I couldnt .
find eggs to set. Maybe among the many you meet, you might be.
able to locate some for me. If so, I would certainly be grateful_
and do hope you will not feel I am imposing too much, in asking
this, though it is out of your state, but my father was born in Atlan-
ta some 90 years ago. I have only lately come here from California. .
Hope that I may hear from you, I am ;
Very respectfully,
