On Sunday, March 5, 2017, an angel slipped into the room at University
Hospital in Augusta, Georgia and quietly took Jeanette Reid Thurmond by
the hand and led her to her heavenly home,
Jeanette Reid Thurmond was born June 6, 1935 to the late Alexander
Bishop and Rosa Bell Walton Reid; she was the oldest of five children with
Ann, Elease, and Alexander preceding her in death.
Jeanette attended Richmond County Public Schools. She was a proud
member of the Lucy C. Laney High Class of 1954. While she attended
Laney, she was a cheerleader. After graduating high school she was
among one of the first nursing assistants at Talmadge Hospital of Augusta,
Georgia. She was also very proud that she was a co-founder in establishing
Babyland, the first black nursery in Newark, New Jersey.
Jeanette received her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood
Education from Adelphi University in New York. After returning to Augusta,
she worked at Local 1137 Labor Union, County Commission Public Relations
and retired in 1999 from Richmond County Recreation and Parks. She was
also the proprietor of her own child care facility, "Jemas." She worked with
Bethel's Summer Enrichment Program for over seventeen years, and she
subbed for the Richmond County School System for the last seventeen
years.
Jeanette accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age
by joining the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorialship of
the Reverend Henry Phinizy, Sr. She became a Catholic after moving to
Newark, New Jersey,
In 1982, she married her life-long friend from high school and she moved
back to Augusta. Jeanette joined Bethel A.M.E. Church after returning
to Augusta, Georgia (her husband's church). She was very active in the
church. She was a member of the Chancel Choir, the Lay Organization,
the Pastor's Guild Board (president), the Choraliers, the Barbara C. Hudson
Female Usher Board, Bethel's Kitchen Ministry, the Steward Board, and a
former member of the E.W. Wells Gospel Choir.
Jeanette was a member of numerous organizations. She was a proud
member of the Zeta Eta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She worked
untiringly with the Super Reunion of Lucy C. Laney Alumni. She was a
member of the National Association of University Women. She received
several awards, plaques, and accolades for her numerous humanitarian
acts of kindness, service, and dedication to various organizations and
community involvement. She was honored as Bethel's 2016 Woman of the
Year, Zeta of the Year, Co-founder of Babyland,

When I looked at you I saw a beautiful woman,
And there are so many dimensions to that beauty -
Strength, elegance, grace and kindness.
I loved the way you carried yourself;
What a queen you were.
I loved having you as a wife
Who filled my heart with so much pride.
But, more than anything,
I love you . . .
You were my heart and soul,
And you meant everything to me.
All My Love,
Your Husband, Augustus C. Thurmond
