Hall, Jr. - Pastor - Officiating - Alpha June 6, 1935 Omega 5, 201 7 On Sunday, March 5, 2017, an angel slipped into the room at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia and quietly took Jeanette Reid Thurmond by the hand and led her to her heavenly home, Jeanette Reid Thurmond was born June 6, 1935 to the late Alexander Bishop and Rosa Bell Walton Reid; she was the oldest of five children with Ann, Elease, and Alexander preceding her in death. Jeanette attended Richmond County Public Schools. She was a proud member of the Lucy C. Laney High Class of 1954. While she attended Laney, she was a cheerleader. After graduating high school she was among one of the first nursing assistants at Talmadge Hospital of Augusta, Georgia. She was also very proud that she was a co-founder in establishing Babyland, the first black nursery in Newark, New Jersey. Jeanette received her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Adelphi University in New York. After returning to Augusta, she worked at Local 1137 Labor Union, County Commission Public Relations and retired in 1999 from Richmond County Recreation and Parks. She was also the proprietor of her own child care facility, "Jemas." She worked with Bethel's Summer Enrichment Program for over seventeen years, and she subbed for the Richmond County School System for the last seventeen years. Jeanette accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age by joining the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorialship of the Reverend Henry Phinizy, Sr. She became a Catholic after moving to Newark, New Jersey, In 1982, she married her life-long friend from high school and she moved back to Augusta. Jeanette joined Bethel A.M.E. Church after returning to Augusta, Georgia (her husband's church). She was very active in the church. She was a member of the Chancel Choir, the Lay Organization, the Pastor's Guild Board (president), the Choraliers, the Barbara C. Hudson Female Usher Board, Bethel's Kitchen Ministry, the Steward Board, and a former member of the E.W. Wells Gospel Choir. Jeanette was a member of numerous organizations. She was a proud member of the Zeta Eta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She worked untiringly with the Super Reunion of Lucy C. Laney Alumni. She was a member of the National Association of University Women. She received several awards, plaques, and accolades for her numerous humanitarian acts of kindness, service, and dedication to various organizations and community involvement. She was honored as Bethel's 2016 Woman of the Year, Zeta of the Year, Co-founder of Babyland, Jeanette loved to cook and was noted for her macaroni and cheese, collard greens, glazed carrots and nutcake. Jeanette leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted husband and best friend, Augustus, C. Thurmond; two daughters, Brenda T. (Alexander) Williams of Jackson, Mississippi and Janet T. Truesdale of Augusta, Georgia; son, Farid Marquz of New Jersey; five granddaughters, Tysheea Tucker of Jackson, Mississippi, Naimah Tucker of New Jersey, Sasha Thurmond, Katrina Keys of Mississippi and Francesca Mafias of Pennsylvania; five grandsons, J. Brian Truesdale of California, Corey (Angel) Truesdale of North Carolina, Brandon Truesdale of Augusta, Georgia, Shawn Williams of Mississippi and Jermaine Williams of Texas; seven greatgrandchildren; sister, Carrie R. (Willie) Curtis; eight nieces, Yolanda Reid of New Jersey, Jackie King, Rosalynn Curtis and Sharona Harmon of Augusta, Georgia, Tasha Cook of Atlanta, Georgia, Pamela Thurmond Odgen of Michigan, Shelia Thurmond Meyers of Washington, DC and Deirda Thurmond of Mississippi; eight nephews, Tony Curtis, Jeffery Curtis, Brian Hampton and James Patterson of Augusta, Georgia, Derrick Curtis of Texas, Johnathan Curtis of South Carolina and Peter Thurmond of Pennsylvania; three great nieces; three goddaughters, Veranda Reid, Lillie Boyd of Augusta, Georgia and Ericka Nelson of Marietta, Georgia; four godsons, Johnathan Ivey of Maryland, Marc Ivey of Atlanta, Georgia, Benjamin Ivey of Boston, Massachusetts and Derrick Nelson of Augusta, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Rosa Marshall Thurmond of Washington, DC and Blondell Roundtree of Pennsylvania; aunt, Mrs. Doris Searles; and a host of friends, family and adopted family. ^kdeh ol (Service Prelude...............................................Mrs. Hettie Copeland "Take Me To The King" Processional.............................................Clergy and Family Hymn of Praise..............................Bethel A.M.E.
