Ms. Ida Ruth Dowers leaves to cherish her memories, Her
Sisters: Mrs. Sallie Mae Holmes, Mrs. Virginia Barnes, and
Mrs. Bertha M. Webb. Sister-in-Law: Mrs. Fannie Nell
Dowers and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends who
will cling to every loving memory that was shared with her.
At an early age, Ida Ruth was taught the importance of knowing
and serving God. As a result of this teaching and strong family
values, she joined and served in the Allen Temple AME Church
in Tifton before beginning her career path.
Ida Ruth attended and completed the public schools of
Tifton. After graduating from high school, she realized the real
importance of education, so with the blessings of her family,
she chose to matriculate at the College by the Sea, Savannah
State College, where she received a B.S. Degree in Home
Economics. As she continued her education, she received a
Masters Degree and a Specialist in Education from the
University of Georgia in Home Economics, with additional
studies at Cornell University in New York. Many lives have
been touched and enhanced because of her desire to avail
herself to the youth of the church, the school, and the
community. She vigorously worked and served in many, many
capacities at her church, Mt. Olive AME, in Waynesboro, GA.
With education being a motivation force in her life, she
enjoyed her teaching career in the school systems of Burke and
Richmond Counties, retiring from Glenn Hills High School in
Augusta. Ida Ruth was definitely community oriented. She was
a former Advisor of the Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club of
Augusta, a life member of the SSUNAA, an active member and
past President of the local Alumni Chapter, past Vice President
of the Southern Region of SSUNNA, Attendant to Ms. National
Alumni Association in 1985, member of the GA retired
Teachers Association, member of Kappa Delta Pi at the
University of Georgia, and she is a Golden Life Member of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
