Dowers was born September 26, 1932 to the late Mr. Willie and Elizabeth Dowers in Eldorado, Ga. He was the 6th child of 8 children. He completed Tift Industrial High School, and afterwards he enlisted in the Army where he served 3 years. After returning from the service he worked as a cement finisher for many years while living in Tifton, later moving to Atlanta. He met his wife Christine Hulin Dowers, who preceded him in death, while in Atlanta. Also preceding him in death, were his Two Sisters: Elizabeth Dowers and Willie Nell Dowers. One Brother. Richard Dowers He leaves to cherish his memories: by: His Sisters: Mrs. Sallie Mae Holmes, Mrs. Virginia Barnes, and Ms. Bertha Webb. His Sister-in-Law: Mrs. F annie Nell Dowers. Webb. Sister-in-Law: Mrs. Fannie Nell Dowers and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends who will cling to every loving memory that was shared with her. At an early age, Ida Ruth was taught the importance of knowing and serving God. As a result of this teaching and strong family values, she joined and served in the Allen Temple AME Church in Tifton before beginning her career path. Ida Ruth attended and completed the public schools of Tifton. After graduating from high school, she realized the real importance of education, so with the blessings of her family, she chose to matriculate at the College by the Sea, Savannah State College, where she received a B.S. Degree in Home Economics. As she continued her education, she received a Masters Degree and a Specialist in Education from the University of Georgia in Home Economics, with additional studies at Cornell University in New York. Many lives have been touched and enhanced because of her desire to avail herself to the youth of the church, the school, and the community. She vigorously worked and served in many, many capacities at her church, Mt. Olive AME, in Waynesboro, GA. With education being a motivation force in her life, she enjoyed her teaching career in the school systems of Burke and Richmond Counties, retiring from Glenn Hills High School in Augusta. Ida Ruth was definitely community oriented. She was a former Advisor of the Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club of Augusta, a life member of the SSUNAA, an active member and past President of the local Alumni Chapter, past Vice President of the Southern Region of SSUNNA, Attendant to Ms. National Alumni Association in 1985, member of the GA retired Teachers Association, member of Kappa Delta Pi at the University of Georgia, and she is a Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Christian, Eduacator, Mentor, Friend- Ida Ruth Dowers.
