DC-6's Will Cruise -
at 300 Miles Per Hour
The DC-6's are coming. A fleet of these
ultra-modern transports will start flying Delta
routes in September, to cut hours from
schedules and bring the South the most
modern plane in airline use.
The DC-6 is a four-en:rined plane, !"imilar
in silhouette but larger than the DC-4's now
flown by Delta. It carries 56 passengers in
uncrowded ease and cruises at over 300 miles
per hour. This speed will cut Chicago-:\liami
flight times to four hours or less, while New
Orleans to Ddlas will be well under two
hours.
The cabin of the DC-6 is pressurized. You
will have the comfort of low-level or normal
pressure, while the DC-6 flies at smooth and
weather-free altitudes of 15,000 to 20.000
feet. You can talk in a whisper in flight. the
noise level is so low due to sound-proofing.
An air conditioning system maintains cabin
comfort in both winter and summer. All
DC-6" will have ILS", the landing system
which cuts weather delays at airports, and
Lexington Horse Races Begin
A flight on Delta to Lexington, Ken-
tucky, will take you to Keenland Race
Track where spring races are sched-
uled April 7-22. Keenland is one of
the only non-profit tracks in the world,
with all profits turned over to chari-
ties and education. Other events make
it a year-round attraction.
all have reversible propellers to make land-
inl!S smoother and shorter.
Cabins are large and luxurious, with ma-
hogany paneled walls. individual reclining
seats and concealed lightinir. Interiors are
made more attractiYe by beinir divided into
three semi-separate sections to remove the
monotony of long rows of seats. The passen-
ger entrance, coat room and galley are in
the center and in effect divide the cabin.
Then, at the rear, there is a separate club
lounge where six persons may sit on a semi-
circular divan and pla_- irin rummy or hold
a business conference in flight.
Up forward are senarate rest rooms for
men and women. with fluorescent lighting.
extra-large mirrors and double wash basins.
One other feature you will especially like
on the DC-6 is the Yi:-:ibility. Windows are
large and rectangular. making it easy to see
from either inf"ide or aisle seats. And. in ac-
cordance with Delta's policy, seats are built
in pairs only.
DC-6 schedules are not yet fixed hut there
will be long non-stop and express flights be-
tween all major cities.
Delta Now Serves New Orleans
From Atlanta and Cincinnati
There's a new Delta route down through
the South to New Orleans. DC-4 Deltaliners
now fly express schedules between Atlanta
and ew Orleans, with Birmini:rham as the
only stop each way. There are fast new
.I
Aiahts between Charleston and New Orlean. ,
with DC-3"s also serving Columbia, Augu>'ta,
Atlanta, Columbus, l\Iontgomery, :Meridian
and Hattiesburir. And Cincinnati, a century-
old partner in trade with Nf'w Orleans, now
has its first one-plane through air service
to the Crescent City.
These new flights were made possible liy
an exten:-:ion which closed the gap in the
Delta system between l\leridian and New
Orleans. Hattiesburg, newest addition to the
Delta map, is the commercial and industrial
center of Southern :\1ississippi, and site of
one of the largest plants of the Hercules
Powder company.
With the new through service, New Or-
lt>ans will be just 5 hours from Cincin-
nati Yia Delta. First one-plane service from
Knoni1le to New Orleans also will be
provided.
