Criminal and civil cases appeared before the court. Of particular note are are
the indentures of apprenticeship and the labor contracts between freed slaves
and their former owners.

The history and
documentation of the County Court is inconsistent. As the judicial successor to
the Inferior Court, the Court was introduced in May of 1866 and operated until
its duties were suspended from 1870 until February of 1876. During this hiatus,
County Court duties were unsuccessfully performed by the 37th District Court
and by the already existing Justice of the Peace Courts. After its
reintroduction in 1876, the County Court continued in existence until December
of 1899 when it was superseded by the City Court of LaGrange.
The
majority of the documents date from May 1866 to August 1868. This section is
very complete and sheds light on the early Reconstruction period. Of particular
note are the indentures of apprenticeship and the labor contracts between freed
slaves and their former owners. The years after 1868 are only partially
documented. Many County Court cases were transferred to Superior Court on
appeal while many misdemeanor criminal cases were sent to County Court from
Superior Court for trial.
