Scope and Content
Ordinary Court records, dating 1852-1976, are established as a separate judicial body in July of 1852, the Court of Ordinary oversaw the settlement and administration of estates and guardianships and ruled on the sanity or competency of individuals. Approximately 95% of these records are the estate returns from the yearly reports of an administrator to the county ordinary. The estate returns provide valuable family information for genealogists and contain minute details concerning the everyday expenses and cost of living for Troup County residents during various historical periods.
Also included are bonds and oaths of some county officials, a handful of election returns, and a number of estray cases. Cases in Ordinary Court were not settled by juries, but judged solely by the Ordinary. The Ordinary Court became the Probate Court in 1976.
