- Description:
- Postcard (tinted halftone, divided back, 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches) titled The Art Galleries, Glasgow - The card features a central depiction of the Art Galleries of Glasgow, surrounded by a border of clan Cameron, Stewart, MacDonald, MacDuff, Gordon and Fraser tartans. The construction of Kelvingrove was partly financed by the proceeds of the 1888 International Exhibition held in Kelvingrove Park. The gallery was designed by Sir John W. Simpson and E.J. Milner Allen and opened in 1901, as the Palace of Fine Arts for the Glasgow International Exhibition held in that year.[5] It is built in a Spanish Baroque style, follows the Glaswegian tradition of using Locharbriggs red sandstone, and includes an entire program of architectural sculpture by George Frampton, William Shirreffs,[6] Franciss Derwent Wood and other sculptors. There is an urban myth in Glasgow that the building was accidentally built back-to-front, and the architect jumped from one of the towers in despair upon realizing his mistake. In reality, the grand entrance was always intended to face into Kelvingrove Park. No descriptive text on reverse. Postage affixed: One penny. Postmarked Sep 2 1908, Glasgow. *Note: B & R’s “Camera” Series was published by Brown & Rawcliffe, Ltd. (1903-1907), a publisher of lithographic postcards of Liverpool, England. These included views of England with a propensity for large Scottish tartan patterned borders and heraldry. Their tinted halftone cards were manufactured in Great Britain.
