- Description:
- Postcard (color, divided back, 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches) titled Clan Farquharson - The card features the clan crest and an inset depicting a clansman in full dress, surrounded by a tartan border. Text on reverse: The Clan Farquharson. Originally of the same stock as the Mackintoshes, the Farquharsons were one of the prominent clans of the powerful confederacy of the Clan Chattan. They are believed to derive their descent from Farquhar, a son of the third Shaw of Rothiemurchus. Their territory was the domains of Invercauld and Finzeanin in Aberdeenshire, and Balmoral, our Sovereign’s Highland home, was formerly in the possession of this family. Their slogan was “Carn an Cuimhne” The Cairn of Remembrance, and their badge the little Sunflower. *Note: The Valentine Company, a lithographic printing firm, was founded in 1825 in Dundee, Scotland by John Valentine. His son James became an early pioneer of photography and by the 1860’s his work was being reproduced by the Valentine Company as prints and stereo-views. In 1880 Valentine began producing Christmas cards and by 1896 they began printing postcards. Up until 1882 they had only published views of Scotland. Colourtone cards were issued in the 1930’s and printed at tinted halftones. They continue using lithographic dots of fawn rather than yellow, and their blues and reds tend to be distinct. They are distinguished by thick Tartan patterned borders with symbolic elements added.
