- Description:
- Postcard (color, oilette, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled The Sinclair – The inset on this card shows Castle Sinclair Giringoe, considered to be one of the earliest sets of Clan Sinclair. It comprises the ruins of two castles: the 15th-century Castle Girnigoe
and the early 17th-century Castle Sinclair. Text on reverse: The Clan Sinclair. This clan is descended from the Comte de Saint Claire, one of the Norman nobles, who came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. They obtained various grants of lands from the Crown, and throughout the centuries maintained a position of influence in the government of Scotland. They have been a family of particular distinction. The chief was made Earl of Orkney, and later Earl of Caithness. Their badge is “Whin”. "Scottish Clans" Series VII 9559. Printed in England. *Note: This card is one of the Scottish Clan Postcards produced by the famous Raphael Tuck Company of London. Each card shows the clan tartan, clan emblem, plant, and either the traditional clan seat or a picturesque landscape from the clan's traditional “stomping ground.” The series was first issued in 1906. It consisted of seven sets of six cards each. Each card was labeled “Oilette” which refers to a particular type of postcard production. In 1883, Queen Victoria granted the firm the Royal Warrant of Appointment. Tuck cards thereafter bore the message, "Art Publishers to Her Majesty the Queen". Future sovereigns continued the warrant of appointment. - Metadata URL:
