- Postcard (color, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled 2. Highlanders Pipe Themselves Back From The Trenches – The card is one in the series of Daily Mail Battle Pictures. - “The Daily Mail Official War Post Cards (Crown Copyright Reserved) were produced from photographs taken by official war photographers based on the Western Front. They did not show the true horror of trench warfare, but they did provide a pictorial record for the public. The cards were released between 6th September 1916 and April 1917. There were 176 cards in 22 sets, each of 8 cards. Within this total of 176 cards, 105 different photographs were used, mostly of images from the Battle of the Somme which raged from July through November 1916.” Jeff Briggs https://www.postcard.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/Daily-Mail-Official-War-Postcards-Overview.pdf . Text on reverse: Our gallant Highlanders, who love to charge to the enemy to the skirl of the pipes, are fond of playing their national music in lighter mood as seen in the picture.
