- Description:
- Postcard (color, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled Casino at Thunderbolt, near Savannah, Ga. - Thunderbolt is just east of downtown Savannah. It is said the name “Thunderbolt” was given to the area after a rock was shattered by a "thunderbolt" causing a spring to gush from the ground on the site. Oglethorpe felt the area, Located on a bluff overlooking the intercostal waterway at the Wilmington River, was one of military importance. Fortifications were built on the bluff and the area was used in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. In 1875, the Thunderbolt Casino was built on the river front. It became a popular recreational area and was used often for groups and events. The casino burned in 1930 and the Thunderbolt Marina was built on the site. No descriptive text on reverse.
