- Description:
- Postcard (color, linen texture, white border, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled: The SS Monterey, 632 Feet Long
79 Breadth
Gross Tonnage 19,000
Speed 20 ½ Knots. - The SS Monterey was a luxury ocean liner launched on 10 October 1931. Monterey was built to promote travel to Hawaii and for Pacific Ocean liner service. She carried much-appreciated supplies to the Bear of Oakland on Byrd’s second expedition to the South Pole. In World War II, the Monterey served as a fast troop carrier, often operating alone so she would not be slowed by formation navigation in a convoy. Text on reverse: At Sea, Matson Liner “Monterey” Where the ancient Polynesians once traveled in their frail canoes, guided only by the stars, follows the great “Monterey,” ship of luxury, across the Pacific, greatest of all oceans between San Francissco, Los Angles, and Honolulu, Pago Pago, Suva, Auckland, and Sydney. The service of Matson luxury liners aims to build good-will between the Pacific Coast, Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia. Card number 26633. - Metadata URL:
