- Postcard (color, linen texture, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled Courtyard and Prison Rooms in the Cabildo, New Orleans. La. picturing the inside of a courtyard including two cannons. The original Cabildo was destroyed in the Great New Orleans Fire (1788). The Cabildo rebuilt between 1795–99 became the seat of Spanish colonial city hall of New Orleans. The Cabildo was the site of the Louisiana Purchase transfer ceremonies late in 1803, and continued to be used by the New Orleans city council until the mid-1850s. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960. It is now the Louisiana State Museum Cabildo. Text on reverse: The Courtyard and Prison Rooms. Old Cannon, and Torture Stocks in the Cabildo at Chartres and St. Peter’s Streets. The room at the extreme right on the ground floor, is the cell in which the pirate, Jean Lafitte was incarcerated after his capture by the Americans. Later. After his services were accepted by General Andrew Jackson and he participated in the Battle of New Orleans, where he covered himself with glory, subsequently receiving pardon from the Congress of the United States. “New Orleans – America’s Most Interesting City” Card number 1B-H132.
