- Description:
- Postcard (color, linen textured, white bordered, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled: NA.8 - "The Only Doubled Barreled Cannon in the World. Athens, Ga." According to the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government’s website, the double-barreled cannon, the only one of its kind, is among the most unusual relics ever to be preserved from the Civil War. It was originally designed by John Gilleland of Athens and built at the local foundry in 1863, when an anxious community feared attack by invading northern armies. Text on reverse: "The Double Barreled Cannon, at the corner of Hancock and College Aves., was made at the Athens Foundry during the War Between the States and is believed to be the only gun of its type in the world." Card number 46568
