- Description:
- Postcard (color, linen textured, divided back, 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) titled Clark Howell Dormitory for Boys, University of Georgia, Athens, Ga - A69, featuring a large brick, 2-storied building. The 33,000-square-foot Colonial Revival building was constructed in 1937 at a cost of $15,000, including WPA funds. It was the first steel frame construction in the Southeast. It is named for Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Georgia political leader Clark Howell, who graduated from UGA in 1883. Originally, it served as a dormitory for 100 male students. Today, it houses the Career Center, Disability Resource Center and University Testing Services. Text on reverse: The University of Georgia, established by Legislative Act in 1785, is the oldest chartered State University in the United States. Beginning with a gift of several hundred acres of land, it has grown through the years to a campus of nearly 4,000 acres. From an attendance of 38 students in its first year, its enrollment has increased to around 7,000. The main Campus has many beautiful buildings and is located near the center of Athens. Card number 80330.
