BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SIMULATION

Business Management Simulation offers students a chance to make crucial decisions involving a mock firm's business
dealings during a two-year period. Classroom knov^ledge is put to a practical test.

Competition is provided each year through the Intercollegiate Business Game sponsored by Emory University. Teams
from thirty colleges and universities from across the nation pit their managerial skills via Emory's computer center. At
the end of game play, the teams meet for three days in Atlanta. Case studies and oral presentations are made to a panel
of business leaders u/ho act as judges. Industry winners then compete to determine an overall winner. West Georgia
College's team has been an industry winner three times and was overall winner last year. Dr. Leland Gustafson and
Dr. Bill Phillips are Faculty advisors.

Claire Dixon, Bill Vaughn, Cathy Tally, and Stan Lowery reach agreement on a corporate decision.

DAY CARE CENTER

The Campus Day Care Program is a part
of the Early Childhood Department of
the School of Education.

The staff all have undergraduate
degrees in Early Childhood and are
working on graduate degrees in the same
area.

Both undergraduates and graduates do
field experience at the Center. Child
care theory is based upon Piagetian
concepts.

136

Care is offered for a four hour period, during which the
children participate in free play and group activities, as
well as in guided play and curriculum activities.

Language arts are taught along with games and creative
arts. Children also cook simple dishes under supervision
and learn about mixing and physical changes.

The Center is administrated by Dr. Virgil Short and is
directed by Emily Johnson, both of the Early Childhood
Department of the School of Education.

137

NURSING

The Nursing Program at West Georgia College graduated its first
class in 1976.

The two year/six quarter course of study leads to an Associate of
Science degree in Nursing. Students may then become Registered
Nurses by passing state examinations.

The program is directed by Jeanette Bernhardt. Presently, there is
a staff of six full time instructors. Enrollment in the program is
normally limited to fifty students.

138

139

CERAMICS

Under the direction of Cameron Covert, who
studied with the late Mark Hansen, students learn
about the structure of glass and the composition of
various clays and glazes.

The students design and make their own pots and
ceramic objects and fire them in electric and gas
kilns.

Each year a Foreign Language Day is held which is
attended by visitors to the college aa well as students. The
language laboratory is one of the best equipped in the state.
It provides students with many services, including cassettes
to be taken home for study. The program is directed by Dr.

SUPPORTING THE FUTURE . . . TODAY!

During the past 30 years, Southwire Company
has hired hundreds of young men and women
from colleges and universities spanning the
nation. Among these are a considerable number
of graduates of West Georgia College, a veritable
wealth of creative talent.

These WGC graduates now work in almost
every phase of Southwire's operations - from
management to metallurgy, finance to foreign
languages, employment to economics. At
Southwire, West Georgia grads serve in
communications, purchasing, sales, and research
and development. Many have bachelor's degrees,
and an equal number have obtained master's
degrees.

It is through the constant supply of fresh
ideas furnished by the graduates of our colleges
that Southwire Company has continued its
remarkable growth in the past three decades.
Because of this, we strongly support our
educational system as the basis of successful
private enterprise and constantly search for keen
professionals to fill available jobs.

Pictured here are a sampling of West Georgia
College graduates now working in various
capacities throughout the company.

EDITOR'S PAGE

After having taken over 600 pictures and used approximately 200
hours of my free time in the production of this book, in addition
to working at my "real" job an average of 20 hours per week, I can
feel nothing but contempt for those who could have worked on the
CHIEFTAIN but claimed they "didn't have time."

Therefore, this, my final duty, is made simpler. There is but a
handful of people to thank.

First, to Professor Bill Doxey I owe deepest gratitude. He refused
to let the CHIEFTAIN die and he never let me give up. Doxey's
wife, Lyndall, began pinch-hitting in our ad sales "department"
and worked hard to provide the bulk of our advertising sales
revenue.

Roxy Sherrill, our sole darkroom technician, saved our hides by
processing and printing those 600 pictures. I'm very grateful to her.

Another big thank you to Jerry Mock and Jane Bentley of the
Learning Resources Center who provided equipment and
darkroom facilities.

Yvonne Parrish helped schedule the scores of organizations for
photo appointments.

Those who took or provided pictures include Tony Boatright,
Carroll Publishing Company, Curtis Cox, David Edwards, Glovis
Gore, Donna Jeter, Dan Minish, Marcia McCrory, Bob Owen,
David Parkman, Dr. Bobby Powell, Roxy Sherrill, Tracy Tate, Betty
Walker, the WEST GEORGIAN, and Darrie Wohlman.

To a cooperative and understanding faculty, thank you for putting
up with inconveniences and, in the case of many faculty members,
for going all out to facilitate production.

To Mel Caraway, infinite gratitude for his help with budget matters,
and to Polly Gosper, Mel's secretary, thanks for taking messages for
us.

And to the most helpful and patient man on earth, Ross Henderson
of Walsworth Publishing, thank you for guiding another new crew
through to another yearbook.

And students, this is as varied a representation of our campus life
as our miniscule staff could make it. If you want improvements, it's
your book and there's always next year. If you can find the time,
join the staff!

Editor-in-Chief and
Photography Editor
