On June 21,1 968, the new three-building academic complex opened to the West
Georgia College students and faculty. The complex includes a four-level, 300,000
volume capacity library, a social science classroom building, and a mathematics-
physics classroom building. The three structures are connected by covered walkways
at two levels, and together form a major portion of the back campus quadrangle now
taking shape.
The new Classroom-Arts building, although delayed by this collapse, is planned for
use next fall quarter.

A capacity, enthusiastic, crowd filled the HPE Building on October, 22, 1968, to
hear the Lettermen who opened with "UP, Up, and Away," followed by "Softly,"
"Taste of Honey," and "Up the Lazy River." Each performer had his own solo which
led the listeners through a range of emotions from love to inspiration, ending with a
tremendous finale of "Born Free."
24
As 3500 students looked on, a small, long-haired figure walked onto the stage
and began strumming unfamiliar tunes on the guitar; however, when he broke into
"Seventh Son" there were no doubts as to who he was, and the crowd went wild.
This was JOHNNY RIVERS.

The spirit at West Georgia was high as
students and alumni united for the 5th an-
nual homecoming winter quarter. Activi-
ties ranged from a bon-fire and parade, to
a semi-formal dance highlighted by the
crowning of Miss Kay Weaver as home-
coming queen. The WGC Braves thrilled
the crowd by their 75-57 victory over the
Georgia State Panthers.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT
ASSOCIATION
The 1 968-69 academic year has seen the Student Government Associa-
tion actively involved in many areas. SGA has sought to establish more per-
sonal contact with the Student Body by encouraging non-SGA members to
participate on SGA committees.
The group has worked with Alpha Phi Omega in establishing a Book Ex-
change, participated in the establishment of the Honor Commission and the
Traffic Appeals Court and initiated the Teacher-Course Evaluation.
Presently, the main objectives of the SGA include broadening the Student
Government representation structure, increasing the responsibility of the
Student Judicial System, and attaining greater student participation in the
academic community.
Noteworthy among the projects which functioned with SGA approval was
the SCAN program. The Student Community Action Now plan was con-
ceived to involve students in the real world. All campus organizations were
urged to participate in any way they could. Concrete activities, such as ef-
forts to establish a Day Care Center and to help tutor in the public schools,
resulted from this.

This season the Braves floored a
surprisingly improved basketball
team. Coach Jan Bennett spent a
good bit of his time last year recruiting
basketball players throughout the
United States.
These boys came from Kentucky,
South Carolina, and as far away as In-
diana. This year's team not only had
more speed but it also had the much
needed height that last year's team
lacked. This team made a strong
showing in the GIAC this season.

FACULTY
155
PRESIDENT BOYD
STEERS VIGOROUS
COLLEGE GROWTH
156
Arriving at West Georgia College from the Georgia Institute of
Technology where he was outstanding as a scientist, scholar, and an
academic administrator, Dr. James E. Boyd assumed the role of
President of the college in August 1961, and since that time he has
steered the institution throughout a period of remarkable growth.
By becoming a member of the original faculty of West Georgia
College, Dr. Boyd began his professional academic career. Holding
his Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from the University of
Georgia Master of Arts in mathematics from Duke University and
Ph.D. degree in physics from Yale University, Dr. Boyd continued his
career at Tech following his marriage to Elizabeth Reynolds Cobb, a
native of Carrollton. Always active in his position as an educational
leader, Dr. Boyd has also contributed leadership in civic, education-
al, religious, and business activities on the local, state, and larger
levels. Serving as vice-chairman of Ga. Science and Technology
Commission and chairman of its Task Force of Oceanography, he
has been a major force in Georgia's entry in the oceanography
field. A member of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, he serves on
the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Atlanta and has twice
served as a deputy to the General Convention of the Church.
Setting the pace with his own professional growth, Dr. Boyd has
continued to lead West Georgia College to greater academic excel-
lence and physical expansion. The office of the President of West
Georgia College requires that its holder be a man of vision and en-
terprise. A mere glance at West Georgia testifies that Dr. James E.
Boyd is just such a man.

DIVISION OF EDUCATION proposed two new programs this year,
subject to approval of the Board of Regents. One program offers stu-
dents a Masters degree in School Administration; while the other pro-
gram offers a six-year study in Counseling and Guidance. Within the
Education Division, two new departments were added: the Department
of Specialized School Personnel and the Department of Teacher Educa-
tion. The Department of Specialized School Personnel offers programs in
Counselor Education, Administration, Supervision, Library Science, and
Student-Teacher Sequence. The Teacher Education Department offers
degrees in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Junior
High, and Secondary Education. The Department of Psychology seeks to
guide the student to understand himself and his culture, to provide serv-
ice courses for other programs, and to provide clinicaT services for stu-
dents and for referrals from community agencies, including the public
schools. The Department of Physical Education continued to grow to
meet the needs of an expanding college. This year the intramural sports
program was made-up of teams from the dorms to encourage participa-
tion by a larger number of students. The Physical Education Department
is made up of four areas: Men's P.E., Women's P.E., Intramurals, and
Services.

DIVISION OF HUMANITIES consists of the departments of English, Phi-
losophy, Fine Arts, and Foreign Languages. In the summer of 1 968, the Divi-
sion of Humanities awarded its first three Master of Art degrees in English.
The English Department continued to make its courses meaningful to the stu-
dent by combining the reading of literature and the writing of composition
into a new course for freshmen. The growth of the Humanities Division was
demonstrated by the addition of the Department of Philosophy. The Philoso-
phy Department seeks to give the student comprehensive principles of reality
in general and practical wisdom. This year the Department of Fine Arts com-
bined the study of art and music into one course. The objective of the Fine
Arts Department is to aid the student in gaining an understanding and appre-
ciation of the arts. The Foreign Languages Department offers courses in
French, Spanish, and German, with majors offered in French and Spanish.
Upon the completion of the Classroom Arts Building, the Department of For-
eign Languages will provide a new language laboratory.
