The complex includes a four-level, 300,000 volume capacity library, a social science classroom building, and a mathematics- physics classroom building. The three structures are connected by covered walkways at two levels, and together form a major portion of the back campus quadrangle now taking shape. The new Classroom-Arts building, although delayed by this collapse, is planned for use next fall quarter. 21 % * f 23 A capacity, enthusiastic, crowd filled the HPE Building on October, 22, 1968, to hear the Lettermen who opened with "UP, Up, and Away," followed by "Softly," "Taste of Honey," and "Up the Lazy River." Each performer had his own solo which led the listeners through a range of emotions from love to inspiration, ending with a tremendous finale of "Born Free." 24 As 3500 students looked on, a small, long-haired figure walked onto the stage and began strumming unfamiliar tunes on the guitar; however, when he broke into "Seventh Son" there were no doubts as to who he was, and the crowd went wild. This was JOHNNY RIVERS. RwSSQI*. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION The 1 968-69 academic year has seen the Student Government Associa- tion actively involved in many areas. SGA has sought to establish more per- sonal contact with the Student Body by encouraging non-SGA members to participate on SGA committees. The group has worked with Alpha Phi Omega in establishing a Book Ex- change, participated in the establishment of the Honor Commission and the Traffic Appeals Court and initiated the Teacher-Course Evaluation. Presently, the main objectives of the SGA include broadening the Student Government representation structure, increasing the responsibility of the Student Judicial System, and attaining greater student participation in the academic community. Noteworthy among the projects which functioned with SGA approval was the SCAN program. The Student Community Action Now plan was con- ceived to involve students in the real world. All campus organizations were urged to participate in any way they could. Boyd assumed the role of President of the college in August 1961, and since that time he has steered the institution throughout a period of remarkable growth. By becoming a member of the original faculty of West Georgia College, Dr. Boyd began his professional academic career. Holding his Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from the University of Georgia Master of Arts in mathematics from Duke University and Ph.D. degree in physics from Yale University, Dr. Boyd continued his career at Tech following his marriage to Elizabeth Reynolds Cobb, a native of Carrollton. Always active in his position as an educational leader, Dr. Boyd has also contributed leadership in civic, education- al, religious, and business activities on the local, state, and larger levels. Serving as vice-chairman of Ga. Science and Technology Commission and chairman of its Task Force of Oceanography, he has been a major force in Georgia's entry in the oceanography field. A member of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, he serves on the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Atlanta and has twice served as a deputy to the General Convention of the Church. Setting the pace with his own professional growth, Dr. Boyd has continued to lead West Georgia College to greater academic excel- lence and physical expansion. The office of the President of West Georgia College requires that its holder be a man of vision and en- terprise. A mere glance at West Georgia testifies that Dr. James E. Boyd is just such a man.
