- Description:
- Part one of a two-part recording. Art Rosenbaum's recording of Henley Kassee on fiddle, Olin Swain on banjo, Joel Cordle on mandolin, and Arthur Swain on rhythm guitar performing in Commerce, Georgia. In an interview segment, Kassee tells Rosenbaum that they groups has been playing together for six years. Kassee learned to play the banjo in 1925, before he could play the fiddle. There were a few old-time musicians in Commerce back then, including a well-known fiddle player with the last name of Snipes. Gid Tanner was popular during this time, and Snipes played in Tanner's style. The Skillet Lickets played in Commerce, with Riley Puckett on guitar. In 1931, Kassee, Snipes and Snipes' brother, who played guitar, would practice in the barber shop. They played square dances, which were often held in peoples' homes. Dances in peoples' homes were friendlier than public dances, at which there could be trouble. Rosenbaum asks about their version of Sugar Foot Rag, and they say that they first heard it on a Red Foley record. Songs and interview segments are as follows: In The Shelter Of His Love, Interview - start in music/Skillet Lickers, Down Yonder, Sugar Foot Rag, Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad, Kentucky Waltz, Waltz You Saved For Me, Tennessee Waltz, Over The Waves, Cryin' Holy Unto The Lord, Usin' My Bible For A Roadmap, Great Speckled Bird, Old '97.
