- Description:
- Video of the 1989 North Georgia Folk Festival in Athens, Georgia. Art Rosenbaum introduces the South Side Community Choir of Gainesville, an African American shape-note singing choir. Part 5 of 8. They sing several songs, and afterwards a festival volunteer reads announcements and the names of raffle winners. Next, "Bongo" is introduced, a dog who plays a miniature piano. Bradley Fincher and Joe Willie play next, Fincher plays body percussion, while Willie sings and plays harmonica. Next, Art Rosenbaum introduces Joe Rakestraw, who plays fiddle and with Art Rosenbaum accompanying him on guitar. Rakestraw begins by telling a story about getting lost in Gainesville, and introduces the first song, which was written when people began to leave the area due to the boll weevil's infestation of crops. He performs the song on fiddle and sings, and next plays a few songs on guitar, including the beginning of "Market Street," when the tape gets cut off. The annual folk music festival is organized by the Athens Folk Music & Dance Society.
