Cherokee,N.C.,October 3,1916.
Honorable Franklyn K.Lane,
Secretary of the Interior,
Washington,D.C.
Sir:
In the year 1913 the Council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians contested the rights to enrollment as members of said Band the names of over four hundred persons and in that and the following year, under the direction of representatives of your Office and the Indian Office, hearings were held for the purpose of finding the true status of the claims of these persons to Indian blood and to share in the property belonging to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
In April of 1914 a hearing was held in your Office in this matter, and although it has been more than two years since the time of that hearing nothing has been received by us relative to the action taken by you in the cases.
As a consequence of this delayed decision our people are becoming restless and are asking us as members of their Council to intercede for them.
We, therefore, respectfully and earnestly request that
B
you inform us of the present status of this matter and that an early decision be made.
Very respectfully,
David Blythe
