Darien, May 12, 1831
Sir,
Though detained three or four days in Savan-
nah by casual indisposition, I reached this place
time enough to meet Mr Couper's arrangements & now
find every thing prepared for our journey through the
Wilderness. The waggons, horses & camp equippage
passed by a forriage of five miles yesterday across
the Altamaha, whether in Company with Mr C.
I shall proceed this afternoon at favorable tide.
Mr Thomas is expected here from Savannah at
four oclock I will probably cross the river with us -
I fear if Mr Carnak is not with him that he
may experience some inconvenience in this very dis-
titute Country in getting his baggage & instruments to
the St Mary's. We have nearly one compliment
of hands & apprehend but little difficulty in procuring
others
The bills made in procuring supplies have some
what exceeded the amount we had supposed necessary
& as the expenditure before us cannot be accurately
estimated, the Commissioners deem it prudent to take
on ample funds; & to pay debts already contracted have
drawn on Your Excellency for one thousand dollars.

This draft will be discounted by the Darien Bank
& the proceeds transmitted to Savannah where sup-
plies were purchased, and where our draft on the
Government is made payable.
Very respectfully Yr the obt.
J Crawford
