- Description:
- The Asa Prior (1779-1854) family, one of the earliest to arrive in Polk County were to prosper not only from farming but from significant real estate prospects. As early as 1832, Asa Prior was buying and selling land in Paulding and Floyd Counties. The Old Mill in Cedartown was built by slave labor in 1848 for Asa Prior, although he ultimately left for Texas in 1850 after having accumulated six thousand acres of land, slaves, and a plantation. The mill changed hands, became known as the Benedict Mill, and as settlers brought their crops of corn and wheat to be ground, the mill became a local gathering place and operated for almost 100 years until 1945.It was first converted into and operated as a restaurant in 1960 by by Mr. and Mrs. “Scooter” Stevens until the early 1990s. In the 1980s, the site was used as the set for the 1984 TV movie "The Baron and the Kid" starring Johnny Cash and Richard Roundtree. Variant names include: Old Mill, Cedartown.
