- Description:
- Mitchell County entrepreneur Judson Larrabee ("J. L.") Hand (1850-1916) was the proprietor of the J.L. Hand Trading Company. An 1871 graduate of the University of Georgia, J. L. Hand moved to Mitchell County during the spring of 1872 and established a sawmill and turpentine distillery at a stop on the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad. Established in 1876 to serve Hand's employees, his commissary eventually became the J.L. Hand Trading Company, eventually becoming southwest Georgia's largest mercantile company. Hand was also the first mayor and first postmaster of Pelham, Georgia, and served several terms in the Georgia General Assembly. He died in 1916. For many years J.L. Hand's department store was the largest in South Georgia. Hand's conglomerate included the Hand Trading Company, Pelham Manufacturing Company, Pelham Phosphate Company, Pelham Oil and Fertilizer Works, the Farmers' Bank of Pelham, Pelham Loan and Investment Company, and the Flint River and Northeastern Railway. The four-story retail facility held nearly 100,000 feet of floor space; it was restored in 2010 and has since been converted into housing. Variant names include: Hand Trading Company.
