- Description:
- After founding Atlanta's Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills in 1868, owner Jacob Elsas installed a large steam engine as part of the mill's early operations. The company rebranded as the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill Company in 1889. By the early 1900s, textile manufacturing had grown into a major industry in Georgia, with 98 mills recorded statewide. Both commercial and historical interests sought opportunities to help restore potentially still-functional mills destroyed by Union forces in the Civil War. 1n 1960, after ownership changes, the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills became Fulton Industries, Inc., was later sold to Allied Products Corporation, ultimately closing in 1978. After laying abandoned for nearly 20 years, in 1997, Aderhold Properties redeveloped the mill into loft apartments. This was no small feat: converting a huge deteriorating building into market-rate housing while also meeting qualifications for Section 106 tax credits under the National Historic Preservation Act earned the project a 2002 Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation Award of Excellence in Rehabilitation. The building is now a Reconstruction-era landmark in the heart of Atlanta's Cabbagetown neighborhood. Variant names include: Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts.
