- Description:
- The Montezuma Historic District, located in Macon County, Georgia, encompasses the city's historic commercial, governmental, industrial, and institutional areas, as well as residential neighborhoods. Stretching about 1.5 miles along Dooly Street, the district is divided by two railroad tracks. The central business district, originally developed near the railroad intersection with Dooly Street, expanded to include several other streets like Beaver, Cherry, and Cabot. Notably, Beaver Street features an historic African American commercial district. The architectural style of the commercial buildings is predominantly commercial vernacular Victorian and early 20th-century commercial, often characterized by decorative brickwork. The downtown area also includes historic industrial sites like the Montezuma Knitting Mill and the Cotton Seed Oil Mill. The district also features several historic community landmarks, such as the Montezuma Depot, the Carnegie Library, the United States Post Office, and several churches. Overall, the historic downtown area of Montezuma retains a high degree of historic integrity, with most buildings in good to excellent condition. In this slide, you can see Maffett’s Department Store at 208 South Dooly Street, a significant commercial building in the district. Constructed circa 1890, the store occupies a one- and two-story building along this commercial block of South Dooly. The building is constructed of brick, and features segmental arched, two-over-two double-hung sash windows with detailed brickwork along the cornice of the parapet wall. Variant names include: Downtown Montezuma, Montezuma Historic District.
