- Description:
- [Hotel Georgian Terrace, view of building and its rounded corners]. Atlanta's Georgian Terrace Hotel, designed by popular architect William Lee ("W. L.") Stoddart in the Beaux Arts style, opened in 1911 at the northeast corner of Peachtree Street and Ponce de Leon Avenue. Built by the George C. Fuller Construction Company for $500,000, the ten-story hotel was planned with grand entrances on both facades, an outdoor cafe terrace, and a cylindrical tower connecting the two sides. The Peachtree Street-side facade features two-story high round arched openings, while the Ponce de Leon Avenue-side includes a ladies carriage entrance with a projecting portico. For many years, the Georgian Terrace Hotel was Atlanta's most fashionable, hosting prominent figures like Vice-President-elect Calvin Coolidge, Enrico Caruso, and the Metropolitan Opera Company, as well as guests for the "Gone With the Wind" premiere, including stars Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. The hotel's design aimed to create a "Parisian hotel on a noted boulevard." This vision of elegance was fortified by Stoddart's Ponce de Leon Apartments, built two years later, followed by the later construction of the Fox Theatre in 1927. Variant names include: Georgian Terrace.
