- Description:
- [Detail, aerial shot of winding interior staircase]. Architect William Lee Stoddart designed the 11-story Ponce de Leon Apartments. Completed in 1913 by the George A. Fuller Company at a cost of $450,000, the building featured a curved façade to face both Ponce de Leon Avenue and Peachtree Street, flanked by two square towers with belfries. The design included large apartment units, bachelor apartments on the top two floors, and Atlanta's first penthouse added in 1932, along with a pharmacy, bookstore, and basement ice plant. Stoddart had designed the smaller Georgian Terrace building across the street two years prior in 1911.Initially hailed as "the South's most luxurious apartments," the complex saw a decline as wealthier residents moved elsewhere during the latter 20th century. Designated a contributing property of the Fox Theatre Historic District and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, the building was purchased, converted to condominiums, and renamed The Ponce Condominium in 1982. In 1993, it was declared a Landmark Building by the City of Atlanta. Variant names include: The Ponce.
