- Description:
- Built for Augusta's then-mayor Nicholas Ware (1776-1824) who later served as a Georgia state representative from 1808-1811 and 1814-1815, and United States Senator from Georgia from 1821-1824; the rectangular structure with two bay windows flanking the entrance was built in 1818. The house has been attributed to architects Daniel Platt and Gabriel Manigault. In more recent times, the building has housed the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art. For more information, see John Linley's The Georgia Catalog: Historic American Buildings Survey ; a guide to the architecture of the state published by the University of Georgia Press in 1982. Variant names include: Ware's Folly. See ref # 73000641 (Gertrude Herbert Art Institute), https://www.nps.gov/subjects/nationalregister/upload/national-register-listed-20240710.xlsx
