- Description:
- Built between 1855-1859 in the Italian Renaissance style, the Johnston-Felton-Hay House was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974, and is a property of The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. The Hay House was among the first in the country to feature modern conveniences that included hot and cold running water, central heating, and modern kitchen, speaker, and ventilation systems. Only two families lived in Hay House over three generations: the Johnstons and the Feltons (joined by marriage through Mary Ellen (Johnston) Felton); followed by the Hay family. Most of the museum’s furnishings date from the Hay family’s occupancy (1926-1962); a few pieces are from the Johnston family (1860-1896). Variant names include: Hay House.
