- Description:
- This Federal-style house was built circa 1825 on North Wilkinson Street by local builder/architect John Marlor(1789-1835). When Milledgeville was Georgia's state capitol, the house was operated as a hotel (the U.S. Hotel, the Beecher-Brown Hotel, and the State's Rights Hotel) serving state legislators and visitors while the Georgia General Assembly was in session until its closure in 1847. The building also served as the state headquarters of the Whig Party. Upon its donation to the Old Capital Historical Society in 1966, the house was moved from its original location on North Wilkinson Street to West Hancock Street. Today the home houses a museum and civic center operated by the Old Capital Museum. Variant names include: Stetson-Sanford House.
