What does it mean when

we say, "A Changing Per-
spective?" A dictionary might
tell us that a perspective is a
specific point of view in
understanding or judging
things and events, but there
is more to life than a defini-
tion found in a book. "A Changing Perspective" could be the
way our college has transformed itself over the years from
an all women's finishing school to a coeducational private
college, or the physical changes to the campus. More truly
though, "A Changing Perspective" refers to us, the students
of LaGrange College, and the many ways we see the world
around us. The student body of this college has become one
of many races, cultures, countries, religions, and genera-
tions with equally diverse points of view. Our diversity
continually forces us to reevaluate our global vision. More
personally, "A Changing Perspective" also means the way
we perceive issues, places, people, and most importantly
ourselves. As our world continues to evolve and change,
so too will our perspectives.

On April 1 , 1 992 through

the generosity of the
Callaway Foundation,
LaGrange College history
was changed forever. The
once land-locked campus
suddenly grew to include the
former Callaway Education
Association land and buildings a pool and cabana, an
auditorium, a second gymnasium, two Softball fields, six
tennis courts and a new home for the growing music de-
partment in the Callaway Education Building. The largest
single contribution in the history of the college doubled the
size of our campus overnight. With this magnificent gift, our
perspective altered to include new educational opportuni-
ties in both academic and co-curricular programs. Future
plans for the Callaway campus include extensive pool
renovations and additions, adding a soccer field, a baseball
diamond and a state-of-the-art fitness facility. A new era in
the life of the college is beginning now and will continue for
generations to come.

For over twenty years

LaGrange College sociology
students have been reaching
out to the surrounding
community in the form of
the volunteer program.
Recently though, helping
those in need has become
more of a way of thinking than just a part of class. Fraterni-
ties, sororities, Wesley Fellowship, Baptist Student Union
and other campus organizations have been incorporating
philanthropy into their activities. Beginning two years ago
the College 101 program also included volunteerism as a
part of its curriculum. Why are we so interested in helping
other people? Ms. Judy Burdett of the sociology department
feels that "a person learns something about himself in
relation to his fellow man by helping other people." From
such well-publicized projects as rebuilding hurricane rav-
aged homes in Florida to the more personal moments of
visiting the elderly in local nursing homes, we students of
LaGrange College continue to demonstrate a concern for
the world and not just ourselves.

1 3

Who is a nontraditional

student? As our college
community continues to
change, so too does the
composition of our student
body. The nontraditional
student is often a little
older, works full-time and
may have a family. The nontraditional student may be from
another country and seeking new experiences at LaGrange
College. The nontraditional student may be returning to
finish an education or to begin a new career. Whatever the
circumstances, the nontraditional student is faced with a
different set of issues. When brought into the classroom,
this perspective provides new insights and ideas that cause
us all to reevaluate the meaning of education.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

A

fter three years of
steady improvement,
. women's soccer coach
Jeff Geeter declared the 1992
Lady Panthers "the best
team yet". The team finished
the season ranked fourth in
the nation in the National
Association of the Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA) for team
offense with 68 goals in 16
games for an average of 4.25
goals a game. The Lady
Panthers displayed an
explosive offense and
tenacious defense against a
tough schedule including
several nationally ranked
teams. Several team
members had outstanding
year-end achievements.

Karen Goodman, forward,
led the nation in the NAIA in
two categories scoring
average and total points.
Karen also ranked second in
goals scored, seventh in
total assists, and tenth in
assists average. Brooke
Dougherty, a midfielder/
forward, finished sixth in the
nation in total assists and
sixth in assists average. Ingrid
Leek, Nicole Hornung, and
Lauren Hutcheson were all
named to the 1992 NAIA
Academic All-America Team.
The women's team and Coach
Geeter will greatly miss the
talents of graduating seniors
Krista Drescher, Nicole
Hornung and Ingrid Leek.

59

MEN'S SOCCER

The 1992 men's
soccer team finished
the season with a
record of 6-10. Although the
Panthers faced a challenging
schedule which included
two Top 20 teams, both the
players and coaches were
disappointed with the final
standings. "We were very
inconsistent all year and
never really got into a good
rhythm, "said Head Coach
Jeff Geeter. "We played quite
well at times, but couldn't
maintain it over the whole
season. But the guys return-
ing know what it will take to
be successful in 1993, and
we're all looking forward to
next season." Highlights of
the 1992 season included a
two game sweep in Nashville
over Belmont University and
Cumberland University, and
a 5-1 Homecoming rout of
Piedmont College. Seniors
Brian Fekete and Chris Selby
gave strong efforts all year
despite injuries. John
Sheffield was named 1st
Team All-District in his
Junior season.

VOLLEYBALL

A time of transition
best describes the
1992 women's
varsity volleyball season.
Coach Larry Thompson, Jr.
worked intensely with a
team of many new members
through "one of the tough-
est schedules in the history
of the school." The team
members came together to
finish the season with a
espectable 16-18 record,
repeating as NA1A District 25
champions and playing in
the Tri-District Tournament

at the University of North
Florida. Coach Thompson
was named for the second
consecutive time as Coach
of the Year in District 25
volleyball. Three outstanding
members of the team made
the All-District Team: gradu
ating senior Maureen Oles,
junior Tracy Schuster and
freshman Heather Hardy.
Tracy Schuster was also,
for the first time in La-
Grange College volleyball
history, named to the All-
Region Team.

BASKETBALL

The 1992-93 basket-
ball year proved to
be a banner one for
the LaGrange College Pan-
thers. Finishing the season
with an impressive 21-11
record, the Panthers earned
a District 25 playoff berth for
the second consecutive year.
With five players averaging
double figures in scoring,
the team displayed a bal-
anced attack that was high-
scoring and exciting to
watch. The three-point shot
was a valuable weapon in
the Panther's arsenal as they
rang up the second highest
three-point shooting per-
centage in the NAIA. The Red
and Black was led by senior

guard Deante Traylor, a first
team All-District and third
team All-America selection,
who broke the LaGrange
College single game scoring
record with a 55 point
outburst against Selma. The
most exciting game of the
season was a 65-64 victory
over Georgia Southwestern
on the road. Despite losing
valuable seniors Tommy
Anderson and Anthony
Arrington, the future for the
Panthers looks promising.
With returning players
Deante Traylor, Laroyd
Boyd, Randy Hagerdon and
continued fan support, Coach
Randy Unger expects another
great season in 1993-94.

BASEBALL

The 1993 baseball
season was one of
frustration and
disappointment. From
January into the season,
the Panthers lost six
pitchers for various rea-
sons. But the 10-45
record is a bit deceiving
as the Panthers lost
several very close games
to some strong teams.
Highpoints included
defeating Brewton Parker
College, ranked eighth in
the nation, on their home
field and defeating the
highly-rated Berry Col-
lege. A solid core group is
returning next year and
Coach Phil Williamson
hopes to recruit some
strong pitchers. Key
seniors Joe Jarrett, Mitch
Purvis, William Carson,
Tim Smith, Mike Shelton
and Trey Baldwin will be
missed.

SOFTBALL

The 1993 LaGrange
College Lady Pan-
thers softball team
enjoyed its finest season
ever as they captured the
school's first ever women's
softball conference champi-
onship. Coach Larry Thomp-
son, Jr.'s Lady Panthers
finished the year with an
overall record of 49-1 1 and
capped the season off with a
2-0 win over North Georgia
College to take the Georgia
Intercollegiate Athletic

Conference (G.I.A.C.) Soft-
ball Championship.

During the 1993 season,
the Lady Panthers set over
twenty new school and
individual records including
the most wins with 49 and
team batting average at .439.
LaGrange College also had
to its credit a championship
in the Chattahoochee Valley
College Invitational Tourna-
ment and a fifth place finish
in the Gulf Coast College
Invitational Tournament.

Graduating senior Kelly
Britsky, junior Melissa
Rossner, sophomore Dana
Lawhon and freshmen Trina
Hughes and Jennifer
Crockett made the all
G.I.A.C. team. Senior Tracye
Taylor was named G.I.A.C.
Player of the Year as she led
the conference in hitting
with an average of .575.
Coach Larry Thompson, Jr.
was named G.I.A.C. Coach
of the Year for the second
consecutive season.

"This team accomplished
something no other team
will ever do and that's
winning the first champion-
ship," stated Coach Thomp-
son. "It was a great year, I'm
really proud of all these girls
and what they were able to
accomplish," he further saidi:
The future looks bright for
the Lady Panthers as they
lose only four players from
this great team.

MEN'S TENNIS

Although the overall
record was disap-
pointing, the 1993
LaGrange men's tennis team
displayed fine effort
throughout the season. Tim
Schippmann led the team in
victories, followed by Chris
Bailey and Scott Hubbard.
Robbie Waggoner and Zen
Ohashi were competitive in
singles and doubles, and
Todd Harrison teamed with
Schippman for several hard-
fought wins at No. 1
doubles. "Tennis is a pretty
strong sport in District 25,"

said Head Coach Jeff Geeter.
"I was really proud of the
effort the guys gave
throughout the season."
Senior Schippman, named
the team's Most Valuable
Player, earned the 4th seed
at No. 1 singles for the
District Tournament and
advanced to the semi-finals
before being eliminated by
eventual champion Berry
College. Freshman
Waggoner earned the
Coaches' Award for his
season-long hard work and
dedication.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

,\v. wv.V

The 1993 LaGrange
College women's
tennis team worked
hard throughout the season
and was competititve in
many matches. Junior Chris
Acquista led the team in
victories and was named the
team's Most Valuable Player.
Allison Weaver and Layla
Rentz gave good efforts and
were involved in several 3-

set matches. Freshman
Robyn Vosbury worked hard
to improve and earned the
Coaches' Award. Emmie
Powell represented the team
well, and lost a tough 3-set
match at the District Tour-
nament. "The women played
hard against some very
strong teams," said Head Coach
Jeff Geeter; "they all showed
improvement over the season."

INTRAMURALS

Campus Recreation
and Intramural
Sports (C.R.I.S.)
hosted approximately 400
different individuals in three
quarters of intramural
competition in 1992-93.
Independent men's teams
won the championship in
flag football, basketball and
softball thus giving the
"Indies" the bragging rights
for Men's Intramural Cham-
pion. Independent teams
also won the title of
Women's Intramural Cham-
pion with wins in volleyball,
basketball and softball.
Teams and/or individuals
also competed in men's

volleyball, coed volleyball,
water volleyball, pickleball,
badminton, bowling, golf,
tennis, ping pong, 3 on 3
basketball and H*0*R*S*E.
Campus 3 on 3 champions
Todd Harrison, Matt Czarick,
David Bartley, Trina Hughes,
Leigh Tibbitts and Kelly
Britsky competed in the
regional tournament in
Atlanta. Although they did
not bring home the champi-
onship, both teams repre-
sented LaGrange College
well. With the completion of
the natatorium, C.R.I.S. is
planning on an even more
exciting year of intramural
competition in 1993.
