4 What does it mean when we say, "A Changing Per- spective?" A dictionary might tell us that a perspective is a specific point of view in understanding or judging things and events, but there is more to life than a defini- tion found in a book. "A Changing Perspective" could be the way our college has transformed itself over the years from an all women's finishing school to a coeducational private college, or the physical changes to the campus. More truly though, "A Changing Perspective" refers to us, the students of LaGrange College, and the many ways we see the world around us. The student body of this college has become one of many races, cultures, countries, religions, and genera- tions with equally diverse points of view. Our diversity continually forces us to reevaluate our global vision. More personally, "A Changing Perspective" also means the way we perceive issues, places, people, and most importantly ourselves. As our world continues to evolve and change, so too will our perspectives. 5 8 On April 1 , 1 992 through the generosity of the Callaway Foundation, LaGrange College history was changed forever. The once land-locked campus suddenly grew to include the former Callaway Education Association land and buildings a pool and cabana, an auditorium, a second gymnasium, two Softball fields, six tennis courts and a new home for the growing music de- partment in the Callaway Education Building. The largest single contribution in the history of the college doubled the size of our campus overnight. With this magnificent gift, our perspective altered to include new educational opportuni- ties in both academic and co-curricular programs. Future plans for the Callaway campus include extensive pool renovations and additions, adding a soccer field, a baseball diamond and a state-of-the-art fitness facility. A new era in the life of the college is beginning now and will continue for generations to come. 9 12 For over twenty years LaGrange College sociology students have been reaching out to the surrounding community in the form of the volunteer program. Recently though, helping those in need has become more of a way of thinking than just a part of class. Fraterni- ties, sororities, Wesley Fellowship, Baptist Student Union and other campus organizations have been incorporating philanthropy into their activities. Beginning two years ago the College 101 program also included volunteerism as a part of its curriculum. Why are we so interested in helping other people? Ms. Judy Burdett of the sociology department feels that "a person learns something about himself in relation to his fellow man by helping other people." From such well-publicized projects as rebuilding hurricane rav- aged homes in Florida to the more personal moments of visiting the elderly in local nursing homes, we students of LaGrange College continue to demonstrate a concern for the world and not just ourselves. 1 3 16 Who is a nontraditional student? As our college community continues to change, so too does the composition of our student body. The nontraditional student is often a little older, works full-time and may have a family. The nontraditional student may be from another country and seeking new experiences at LaGrange College. The nontraditional student may be returning to finish an education or to begin a new career. Whatever the circumstances, the nontraditional student is faced with a different set of issues. When brought into the classroom, this perspective provides new insights and ideas that cause us all to reevaluate the meaning of education. 17 20 21 22 23 EVENTS February 8, 1993 Fashion Show and Lip Sync February 9, 1993 International Olympics February 10, 1993 Food Fair and Cultural Exhibition February 1 1, 1993 International Chapel Service T-shirt sales in Bookstore 24 INTERNATIONAL WEEK 25 1993 EVENTS Philanthropy Day Car Wash Softball Volleyball Tournament Mixers Panhellenic Jersey Day Greek Games Obstacle Course Three Legged Race Press Your Chest Into The Bean Bag Wheel Barrow Race Pie Eating Tug of War Greek T-shirt Day Lake Day at the Moon 26 27 1 9 3 V N Tuesday, April 27 Chapel Service, Natalie Woodruff, Kappa Delta Awards Banquet, Department of Business Administration and Economics, Dr. Donald Ratajczak, Georgia State University, Keynote speaker Wednesday, April 28 Honors Celebration Thursday, April 29 Chapel Service, Laura Rains, College Chaplain and Counselor Focused Workshop, Dr. Rebecca Chopp, Emory University, leader Community Banquet and Awards Saturday, May 1 May Day Activities Parents, faculty, students and alumni gather for lunch on soccer field Step Singing Competition Presentation of Distinguished Alumnus Award Installation of 1993-1994 SGA Executive Committee Presentation of May Day Court, King and Queen Sunday, May 2 Chapel Service, Reverend Larry Roberts, Methodist Children's Home, Macon Road Rallye 1 96H^^ 28 29 SPRING FLING/PARENT 'S DAY 30 31 32 33 34 EVENTS Fall Quarter Braves Game Trip Freshman Elections Foot Rallye Discount Tickets to Cineplex Odeon Theaters Homecoming Festivities Comedy Show Movie: Freddy Returns Road Rallye Trip to Atlanta-Little Five Points and Underground Trip to Boaz Outlet Center Thanksgiving and Christmas Chapel Service Study Breaks Winter Quarter Movie: Singles Lip Sync Ice Skating Trip to Stone Mountain Roller Skating Party Trip to Atlanta Omni-Hawkes Game Quadrangle Dance Trip to Berry College- LaGrange Panthers Basketball Game Road Rallye Study Breaks Spring Quarter SGA Elections Movie: Bodyguard Roller Skating Party Spring Fling: Band Curiosity Shoppe, dinner on the deck, volleyball May Day Road Rallye Rafting Trip on Flint River Trip to Renaissance Festival Study Breaks 35 36 37 38 39 40 1 1 42 43 44 45 THE TAMING OF THE SHREW 46 19 9 2 19 9 3 E X H ITION SCHEDULE September 12-October 31, 1992 November 4-December 18, 1992 January 9-February 23, 1993 February 28-March 29, 1993 April 3-May 4, 1993 May 18-August 31, 1993 John Tweddle, paintings, drawings and sculpture Charles Schmidt and Joan Curran, paintings Corrine Colarusso, Elizabeth Cain and Paige Harvey, paintings Jamie Howard, prints and sculpture, Mary Ruth Moore, photographs John Wawrzonek, dye transfer photographs and workshop Prints from the Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum and Lamar Dodd Art Center and Senior Shows R V N T 49 50 7 M 10 II 12 13 W 15 \I7 20 "2 PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE Fall Quarter Faculty Showcase Recital Mimmi Fulmer, Soprano Artist-in-Residence Recitals, Master Classes, CONTACT Student Recital Mark Ensley, Faculty Piano Recital LaGrange College Singers and Wind Ensemble Winter Quarter Cindy Ensley, Faculty Voice Recital Robert Page, Conductor Artist-in-Residence Master Classes, Open Rehearsals, CONTACT Lee Johnson, Composer Premiere of new CD, The Match, Patterson Planetarium Student Recital Callaway Concert: A Tribute Premiere of Symphony No. 1 by Lee Johnson Spring Quarter LaGrange College Music Festival Ithica Wind Quintet The Music of Paul Goldstaub, Composer Rehearsals, Lessons, Lecture, Workshops Roger Hudson, Faculty Guitar Recital Student Recital 51 Callaway Concert: A Tribute marked the collaboration of Auburn University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Lafayette Society for the Performing Arts, LaGrange College and the University of Georgia in paying tribute to the great philanthropist, industrialist and citizen Fuller Earle Callaway, Jr. On March 5, 1993, composer and director Lee Johnson premiered his Symphony No.l, written in tribute to Mr. Callaway, with scriptural text selected by Dr. Paul Baxter. The team finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in the National Association of the Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for team offense with 68 goals in 16 games for an average of 4.25 goals a game. The Lady Panthers displayed an explosive offense and tenacious defense against a tough schedule including several nationally ranked teams. Several team members had outstanding year-end achievements. Karen Goodman, forward, led the nation in the NAIA in two categories scoring average and total points. Karen also ranked second in goals scored, seventh in total assists, and tenth in assists average. Brooke Dougherty, a midfielder/ forward, finished sixth in the nation in total assists and sixth in assists average. Ingrid Leek, Nicole Hornung, and Lauren Hutcheson were all named to the 1992 NAIA Academic All-America Team. The women's team and Coach Geeter will greatly miss the talents of graduating seniors Krista Drescher, Nicole Hornung and Ingrid Leek. 59 MEN'S SOCCER The 1992 men's soccer team finished the season with a record of 6-10. Although the Panthers faced a challenging schedule which included two Top 20 teams, both the players and coaches were disappointed with the final standings. "We were very inconsistent all year and never really got into a good rhythm, "said Head Coach Jeff Geeter. "We played quite well at times, but couldn't maintain it over the whole season. But the guys return- ing know what it will take to be successful in 1993, and we're all looking forward to next season." Highlights of the 1992 season included a two game sweep in Nashville over Belmont University and Cumberland University, and a 5-1 Homecoming rout of Piedmont College. Seniors Brian Fekete and Chris Selby gave strong efforts all year despite injuries. John Sheffield was named 1st Team All-District in his Junior season. 60 1 . Chris Walsh 2. Chris Selby 3. Coach Larry Thompson, Jr. worked intensely with a team of many new members through "one of the tough- est schedules in the history of the school." The team members came together to finish the season with a espectable 16-18 record, repeating as NA1A District 25 champions and playing in the Tri-District Tournament at the University of North Florida. Coach Thompson was named for the second consecutive time as Coach of the Year in District 25 volleyball. Three outstanding members of the team made the All-District Team: gradu ating senior Maureen Oles, junior Tracy Schuster and freshman Heather Hardy. Finishing the season with an impressive 21-11 record, the Panthers earned a District 25 playoff berth for the second consecutive year. With five players averaging double figures in scoring, the team displayed a bal- anced attack that was high- scoring and exciting to watch. The three-point shot was a valuable weapon in the Panther's arsenal as they rang up the second highest three-point shooting per- centage in the NAIA. The Red and Black was led by senior guard Deante Traylor, a first team All-District and third team All-America selection, who broke the LaGrange College single game scoring record with a 55 point outburst against Selma. The most exciting game of the season was a 65-64 victory over Georgia Southwestern on the road. Despite losing valuable seniors Tommy Anderson and Anthony Arrington, the future for the Panthers looks promising. With returning players Deante Traylor, Laroyd Boyd, Randy Hagerdon and continued fan support, Coach Randy Unger expects another great season in 1993-94. 64 Wke Chambers ~)errill Hutson 7 loyd Wallace Aike Shelton >au\ Connolly 6. From January into the season, the Panthers lost six pitchers for various rea- sons. But the 10-45 record is a bit deceiving as the Panthers lost several very close games to some strong teams. Highpoints included defeating Brewton Parker College, ranked eighth in the nation, on their home field and defeating the highly-rated Berry Col- lege. Soft- ball Championship. During the 1993 season, the Lady Panthers set over twenty new school and individual records including the most wins with 49 and team batting average at .439. LaGrange College also had to its credit a championship in the Chattahoochee Valley College Invitational Tourna- ment and a fifth place finish in the Gulf Coast College Invitational Tournament. Graduating senior Kelly Britsky, junior Melissa Rossner, sophomore Dana Lawhon and freshmen Trina Hughes and Jennifer Crockett made the all G.I.A.C. team. Senior Tracye Taylor was named G.I.A.C. Player of the Year as she led the conference in hitting with an average of .575. Coach Larry Thompson, Jr. was named G.I.A.C. Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. "This team accomplished something no other team will ever do and that's winning the first champion- ship," stated Coach Thomp- son. "It was a great year, I'm really proud of all these girls and what they were able to accomplish," he further saidi: The future looks bright for the Lady Panthers as they lose only four players from this great team. * \ 68 Kristi Plunkett Trina Hughes Dana Lawhon 4 .
