- This footage highlights five of William B. Hartsfield’s six total terms as mayor, from 1940 to 1961. This film begins with silent black and white footage of downtown Atlanta and includes Hartsfield's 1940 re-election campaign; color footage of Hartsfield next to an unidentified building cornerstone from 1952; the "Gone with the Wind" film premiere; and Hartsfield standing in a flooded area with a microphone promoting funding for sewer systems and storm water drainage. Following this is color footage of City of Atlanta officials discussing Hartsfield's impact as mayor, including Sam Massell as well as unidentified individuals, possibly political leaders or officials from the Atlanta City Executive Committee or the Board of Aldermen. The film also includes an interview with Hartsfield about the Atlanta Municipal Airport. The film ends with footage of Hartsfield’s 1971 funeral procession, with Sam Massell and Ivan Allen Jr. in attendance, and his gravesite at Westview Cemetery.
William Berry Hartsfield (1890-1971) served as Mayor of Atlanta 1937-1962. He served on the Atlanta City Council from 1923-1928 and represented Fulton County in the state legislature. Hartsfield was Mayor of Atlanta in 1939 when the city hosted the premiere of "Gone With the Wind," the movie based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell (Marsh).
