View of Central Congregational Church, formerly Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ponce de Leon Baptist Church was founded in 1904 when the congregation of First Baptist Church, Second Baptist Church and other congregations expressed a need for a new church at the north end of the city. The new church was erected at the corner of Ponce De Leon and Piedmont Avenue. In 1929 the congregation had again become spread out and desired a new church. They sold the first church to the Central Congregational Church, and purchased land at Peachtree Road and Wesley Avenue (now East Wesley Road) and the new building, Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, was completed in 1930. The first Ponce De Leon Baptist Church has since been demolished. - Local Identifier:
