View of the First Congregational Church at 140 Houston Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia.
The First Congregational Church was established in 1867 by newly baptized, emancipated slaves with white missionaries from the American Missionary Association. The first church was built at the corner of Houston and Courtland Streets in downtown Atlanta, Georgia on land donated by the A.M.A. a second church, still standing, was built on the same site in 1908. By 1892 the church's congregation had become almost entirely African American, however the church was never formally segregated, and remains open. - Local Identifier:
