State of Change

Dear Students:

Of my many years in education, I
can recall no more challenging time to
be teaching than now because of the
profound changes that are occuring in
American higher education. As this
exciting, new learning environment
develops at Piedmont College, you will
see in your courses an increased
application of computer-assisted
instruction. Our faculty is becoming
more informed about interdisciplinary
study and more attuned to sophisti-
cated and creative delivery systems.
Students' needs are also changing, for
the average age of our student popula-
tion is increasing as people spread
their education over a longer period of
time. As these changes raise the cost
of providing quality education, colleges
must meet the challenge and discover
new sources of financial aid from both
public and private sources.

While such transitions in higher
education may produce an impersonal
learning environment at some colleges,
Piedmont College is committed to
preserving interaction between faculty
and every student on campus. We
believe personal, individualized atten-
tion to the students' investment of time
and intellectual talent will provide the
necessary preparation for our ex-
tremely complicated world. As Pied-
mont College promised its students
almost 100 years ago, we provide four
years of exceptional education in a
Christian, caring community. The
faculty and I will do everything we can
to maintain this long-standing tradition.
Our doors are always open.

IX. Caere discusses his plans. or

the upcoming year with Dr. Stafford
and Elizabeth Veal.

Th,

he 95-96 academic year was an
exciting time of transition. Many
of the changes were "pitched" by

time progressed, he proved to be a
man of his word.

at s your State ofMind?

Piedmont College's unique
blend of students, faculty, and
staff gives the college an
atmosphere where education,
both in and out of the class-
room, flourishes. The state of
mind on campus is in constant
motion. As the year
progresses, the balancing act
between classes and extra-
curricular activity becomes
more difficult.

In spite of the stresses of
college life, the Piedmont
community has learned that
through laughter and friendship
anything is possible.

Seniors Marcy Cincotta and Liz Kelly
have found the perfect balance be-
tween study, leisure, and friendship.

Students such as Fairlight Dover are
always proud to share accomplish-
ments with mom and dad.

JHs a result of the friendly and scenic
environment of Piedmont College,
close to 300 students choose to reside
on campus.

More often than
not, Piedmont
College exists in a
state of grace.
Studies outside the
classroom, perfor-
mances, and even
casual conversa-

arenas for show-

talents and inter-
ests. A great deal
of hard work,
dedication, and
laughter are neces-

...A Fall Tradition

F f* F OOCi always ensures that a large number of stu-
dents, faculty, and staff will attend this annual event. Designed
by the residence life staff, the
luau is a major landmark signi-
fying the beginning of a new
academic year. Students often
show up to check out the food
and end up staying to mingle
with their peers and the "brave"
faculty and staff who choose to
participate. The festive activi-
ties last well into the night and
are interesting topics of discus-
sion during the first week of
classes.

SClTtCl sculpting and hula-
hoop contests are combined with volleyball and tropical cuisine
to create an afternoon of laughter and suspense. The party-
goers lounge on this hill near the volleyball court and enjoy
Piedmont's version of Hawaiian madness.

tSltllleS like those on the faces of Spencer Wright and Kelly
Church (shown above right) are a true testament of the luau's
success. After a night full of passion fruit, pineapples, and play
getting up for class doesn't seem too difficult.

...A home away from home

MJlViftg together takes on a whole new meaning at Pied-
mont. The residence halls are the center of activity throughout
the year. Beginning in late summer, the residence life staff can
be seen preparing for the arrival of students by setting up each
dorm and planning activities. Students move into their rooms
fall semester and soon after call their new quarters home.

Oft any given night, the residents of Getman-Babcock Hall
can be seen lounging on the couch, talking with friends in the
Gazebo, or yes, even studying (for one of Dr. Pleysier's tests, of
course). Purcell residents, on the other hand, take advantage
of being close to the athletic fields by playing a game of
volleyball or shooting hoops in their very own parking lot.

W/CtLLCtCC residents find ways to occupy themselves as well.
The smell of fresh food cooking on the apartment stoves often
brings the other dorm students out to either sample the fine
Wallace cuisine or to survey the damage. All of the students
who choose to reside on campus become part of a unique second
family.

SPRING

...A night on the town

LdBt S LJCLTlCe could be heard echoing through the halls of
Gainesville's Cafe Julius as the 1996 Spring Formal beat its
way into the night. Gathering in
a hall decorated by the Student
Government Association, stu-
dents, faculty and staff enjoyed
the jazzy sounds of the band
Daddy-o-Strut and crowded the
dance floor during every num-
ber. Between sets, couples sat
at tables and ate from an eclec-
tic assortment of refreshments.

...A year for additions

1 illS year saw several improvements. The student center
was transformed into a brand new campus book store and grill.
Many afternoons students were
found shopping, snacking, play-
ing on the new pool table and
watching the large screen t.v..
The student center is on its way
to becoming a favorite campus
hangout. Dr. Cleere and Eliza-
beth Veal are shown here at the
ribbon cutting ceremony for the
bookstore.

1 ttC old maintenance shed

became both an area for the science labs and the fitness center.
The fitness center, which is partly owned by the Habersham
County Medical center, is free for all students. Wellness is a
strong focus on campus.

ilGCLntOTlt is expanding its borders as well. A center in
Athens, headed by Dr. Shumake, opened this year. The center
is designed to serve a growing population of junior and senior
undergraduates as well as graduate students in the greater
Athens area.

SPRING

...A celebration for charity

1 itCVB S a first time for everything" has certainly been
true for Piedmont this year as the first annual Spring Spectacu-
lar got underway in April. Spon-
sored by S.G.A. and The Alumni
Association, this carnival was
one of the highlights of the
spring semester.

11% correspondence with
Alumni day and Spring Appli-
cants day, the carnival was de-
signed as a fund-raising event |p
for the Circle of Hope, a
Habersham County shelter for

women. Among other events, human bowling, the velcro wall,
sumo wrestling, and a variety of club sponsored activities
brought enough people to the event to raise over $700.

1 fl fun and excitement can be seen on the faces of Ben Price
and Chris Bell as they stand in line to fling themselves against
the velcro wall. Hopefully, the carnival will continue to be an
event for many years to come.

GROUP

...A Time to Learn and Laugh

hiCLC it yeCll* various groups of Piedmont students travel all

over the United States. This year their destinations were

concentrated in the Southeast.

The funding for these trips

comes from a combination of

determined club members and

grants made by the Inter Club A.'

Council, a subcommittee of SGA.

SlX different clubs and stu-
dent groups took such trips this
year to attend various confer-
ences and educational seminars.
The Psychology Club and Psi

Chi members went to Norfolk, VA, the Math and Physics Club
visited Washington, D.C., and SIFE, Students in Free Enter-
prise attended the Annual SIFE Regional Exposition in
St. Petersburg, Florida. Also traveling to Florida were the
Piedmont Scholars, who journeyed to historic St. Augustine.
Theatre students made their way to Louisville, Kentucky for
the Southeastern Theatre Conference and the Literary Society
made their annual trip to Mississippi.

...An Opportunity of a Lifetime

IxCCGTttLy Piedmont College has made it possible for stu-
dents to travel to other nations to do in depth studies in their
respective fields. The goal is to
enhance learning and offer a
means of acquiring valuable
field experience. Plans for the
future include more study
abroad programs.

SiuCFlCl was the destina-
tion of a group of history and
archaeology students. Led by
Dr. Al Pleysier, these students
examined the ancient site of

Arkaim and participated in archaeological work at a prehistoric
Bronze Age village. Three students from this trip are shown
here at the campsite.

lL 17 IIS it and theatre students found themselves in
England to study Shakespeare and other writers born there.
The two week trip was packed with activities including a
theatre workshop, visits to several museums, and tours of
important landmarks such as the Shakespeare properties.

Advisors: Dr. Stephanie Almagno and Mr. David Price

The 1 996 Yonahian Staff hopes that each of you enjoys this publication. Realizing
that memories are both delicate and special, we poured several long hours into the
pages of this yearbook. The staff would like to extend great appreciation to Liz Kelly,
Liz Butikofer, Dionne Rosser, and all of you who helped to gather pictures for us.
Most importantly, we would like to offer a special thank you to David Price who is
responsible for ninety-five percent of the photography. We could not have
completed this book without you.
