NAB/BEA Convention

Las Vegas; the place where dreams
come true, where happiness can come
by the roll of a dice and where the Eiffel
tower stands next to the Empire State
Building. How about a trip to this town lo-
cated in the middle of the desert? Sure!

In April 2005, the Mass Communi-
cations department organized a trip to
the NAB, National Association of Broad-
casters' yearly conference located in
the Las Vegas Convention center. Dur-
ing this conference, industry profes-
sionals from all over the world, dealing
with television, radio and multimedia,
meet to show off their latest technology
innovations, discuss new developments
in the field of journalism and meet and
greet to make new contacts. At Pied-
mont, our department has steadily
grown from a small start to develop into
a full blown mass communications de-
partment with its own radio and televi-
sion stations, newspaper, Web site,
magazine, film production and more. In
essence, we have grown into our own
NAB. Therefore, to keep growing and
improving our program, our depart-
ment chair, Dr. Betsey Blakeslee, our
new television professor, Jennifer Arbit-
ter, and I, took the plane out to Vegas to
learn about how the industry is devel-

oping and take a look at new technology
that we'd want to buy for our department.

The NAB conference occurs at the same
time as the BEA (Broadcast Educators' As-
sociation) convention. During this confer-
ence, professors and students from all over
the country meet to discuss the education-
al aspects of our business and how new
developments affect the educational world
of mass media. But, we started at the NAB.

The conference is set up in four gi-
gantic conference halls, jammed full with
television cameras, new software, switch-
ers, satellite trucks, lighting equipment,
computers, microphones and all kinds of
fun stuff that would make any technology
geek feel like he was in heaven. To look
through everything in one day is just im-
possible. We spoke to people who sold the
things we were interested in, we got busi-
ness cards, we shook hands and we met
interesting people who all sold the best
products out there. Later, during the BEA,
we discussed whether it is ok to alter news
footage to make a story more interesting;
we discussed the new tapeless digital
era; and we heard stories about other col-
leges trying to start their own mass com-
munications programs. Those days on the
convention floor and in the discussion ses-
sions were extremely interesting, but tiring.

Of course, we had some time left
over at night to hit the casinos and
the famous Cirque du Soleil shows.
I myself managed to not spend too
much money on either Black Jack
or Roulette. However, going to fancy
restaurants quickly ate up my bud-
get. But, it was a good mix with the
daytime "work" at the convention with
some more relaxing times at night. To-
gether at night while eating sushi, we
talked about what we had seen during
the day and what we might be inter-
ested in buying for our program. The
nighttime hours weren't too bad either.
My room at the Aladdin had a won-
derful view of the strip, a huge bath-
tub and a very soft king-size bed...

In retrospect, it was a very inter-
esting trip, and we have both bought
things we saw at the convention and
used some of our new knowledge to
improve the program. The only dark
moment was when Dr. Blakeslee left
her favorite purse in the taxi and spent
the rest of the night trying to get in con-
tact with the taxi company. We never
saw her purse again, but I'm sure
she still thinks the trip was worth it!

Loudermilk Stadium

With the opening of Lou-
dermilk Field, the Piedmont
baseball team now has a sta-
dium that reflects almost 100
years of competition.

This magnificent facility
was made possible by a gift
from Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Lou-
dermilk in honor of his grand-
parents, Henry and Beulah
Loudermilk, his father, and
six aunts and uncles.

The ballpark is design
to remind fans of the clas-
sic stadiums from baseball's
golden age during the 1930s
and '40s.

It features covered seating
as well as two bleacher ar-
eas, a concession area, and
indoor practice facilities.

At the dedication ceremo-
ny in April 2005, Hall of Fam-
er Phil Niekro and Cy Young
Award-winner Steve Bed-
rosian, both former Atlanta
Braves, tossed out ceremo-
nial pitches to inaugurate the
stadium's first season.

Women's Golf

My Experience in the
Golf Program

Above: Lynne Laseter is one of the freshmen
who make up the young women's golf team.

Being part of the golf pro-
gram at Piedmont College is so
amazing. Coming up from high
school and starting in a program
in college has been a little dif-
ficult. There are so many things
that are different and more chal-
lenging. But there are also things
in the program that make being
on the college golf team much
easier than in high school.

The people on the golf team
make going to practice worth-
while. I am never judged and my
teammates and Coach Glenn
speak of my abilities very positively. Even after a bad shot
they are encouraging. I am not used to that because people
on my high school golf team were so judgmental that it made
it hard for me to improve because all I could focus on was
their negative comments. Here I feel like I can be myself and
I don't have to prove myself to anyone.

When we practice as a team I feel like Coach Glenn talks
to us as a team even if he is talking to us individually. When
he is helping another teammate or myself it is always helpful
information that all of us can use. Maybe we can't use it at that
moment, but eventually it will be used to improve our golfing
abilities.

These build morale on a team and make the individuals
work together.

business Office Retreat

In September,
the business office staff,
Leesa Anderson, Kathy
Perry, Judy Haygood, Kay
English, Christy Orr, Linda
Pitts and Heather Atkins
took off a Friday from
work to have an a-"maze"-
ing adventure in Ellijay,
Georgia.

The annual fall retreat
was held at Grandpa
Jones's Corn Maze and
was meant to serve as a
lesson in teamwork, as
the business office staff-
ers worked together to
make their way through
the corn maze. Former
Piedmont employee and
maze owner, Jewell Jones,
hosted the women. For-
mer Assistant Controller Kristie Dover served as moderator. Activities for the day included teamwork
exercises such as discussions about personal heroes and talking about traits each woman values in
others. The women also got to enjoyed a hayride, a barbecue lunch and a visit to the maze's large
pumpkin patch.

"Out in the corn maze, we each used our individual strengths to make our way to the various check-
points," said Assistant Controller Linda Pitts. "One was the leader, one the navigator, one the moti-
vator, one the caregiver, one the nurturer, one the explorer and one was rather resourceful, finding
alternate routes, otherwise known as the 'corn cutter.'"

The women realized that with each person's special talents, they could accomplish almost anything
they put their minds to, even making it through the beaten path of a complicated corn maze.
"We laughed more than we had in a very long time," said Controller Leesa Anderson.
Most of the women also commented that they had a smile on their face for the rest of the weekend.
Looks like taking a day off to play in the corn can do a lot for one's spirits.

National French Week

*%*

Top: Dr. Curtis Bradford (to the left of the flag, standing behind John Drummond who is sitting down) headed up the community-wide
celebration of National French Week.

The humanities in languages held the annual celebration of the National French
Week on November 8. For the past ten years, the American Association of Teachers of
French (AATF) of the United States has dedicated a week every year to the French lan-
guage. This year the celebrations were from November 2 to 8.

To close the National French Week with a good ending, a party was held at Java
City on the morning of November 8. Several faculty members whose teachings are
somehow related to France, such as French as a foreign language, history, and music,
took their students to the celebration to be able to share with others interesting facts
about the French culture and history.

Dr. Curtis Bradford held a conversation about France in general. First, they talked
about the riots in France and the social conditions that seemed to produce those. Stu-
dents and teachers also named a few stereotypes of French people. A trivia quiz was
held and three students won a calendar each with beautiful pictures from France. Mu-
sic was also one of the subjects that many got involved in.

As an appetizer, a table was full of authentic French bread, jams, butter, Swiss
chocolate, strawberries, and coffee. As an honorable ending, Bradford sang La Marseil-
laise, which is the National Hymn of France.

missions

When this 2005-06 school year began, our
Convocation speaker was Dr. Aubrey Lucas,
president emeritus and longtime professor of
higher education at The University of Southern
Mississippi. During his remarkable career as a
college educator and administrator, Dr. Lucas has
seen more change in higher education than most
people, and he said something that day that has
stuck with me: "Expectations," he said, "become
self-fulfilling prophesies."

Looking back at the past 10 years, I can see how
that applies to Piedmont College, especially as it
involves our student body. Every college expects a
lot out of its students. If it does not, it should not
be in the education business. You do not know what
students can achieve until you begin to demand
their best. Piedmont has always had students who
go on to achieve great things, but in recent years
the college has expanded those expectations. New
programs in each of our four schools-arts and
science, education, business, and nursing-were created with the expectation that more
students would then choose Piedmont to earn their undergraduate and graduate
degrees.

That expectation is now being fulfilled. Graduating classes in recent years have been
the largest in the school's history. But more than that, students leave Piedmont with
the expectation that they will succeed no matter where their career paths take them.

As you look through this yearbook many years from now, I trust that my expectations
and those of your professors for your success will be fulfilled, just as Dr. Lucas
predicted.

Kathy Spiker

Author unknown
Kelly Coleman

"Kathy truly reflected how a nurse should be - she was kind, generous, sensitive, and compassionate. Kathy 's
character is a clear example that I want to strive towards. "

Abbey Conkle

"Kathy was one of the most compassionate and caring individuals I think I will ever know. She baked pumpkin
bread for the entire nursing class at Christmas, she always shared her chewing gum with the class every day (that
is a lot of gum), she always asked people how they were doing, and when they were not doing good she asked how
she could help. She worked very hard in her schoolwork, showing how dedicated she was to become a nurse, and
what a great nurse she would have been. Losing her was a tragic loss, but knowing her was a tremendous gain."

Amanda Boling

"Kathy was blessed with the gift of encouragement. Every life she touched was enhanced by her uplifting person-
ality."
