Ash Girl New York Above L-R: Jennifer Arbitter, Betsey Blakeslee and Per Nyberg at the Las Vegas NAB/BEA Convention Las Vegas; the place where dreams come true, where happiness can come by the roll of a dice and where the Eiffel tower stands next to the Empire State Building. How about a trip to this town lo- cated in the middle of the desert? Sure! In April 2005, the Mass Communi- cations department organized a trip to the NAB, National Association of Broad- casters' yearly conference located in the Las Vegas Convention center. Dur- ing this conference, industry profes- sionals from all over the world, dealing with television, radio and multimedia, meet to show off their latest technology innovations, discuss new developments in the field of journalism and meet and greet to make new contacts. At Pied- mont, our department has steadily grown from a small start to develop into a full blown mass communications de- partment with its own radio and televi- sion stations, newspaper, Web site, magazine, film production and more. In essence, we have grown into our own NAB. Therefore, to keep growing and improving our program, our depart- ment chair, Dr. Betsey Blakeslee, our new television professor, Jennifer Arbit- ter, and I, took the plane out to Vegas to learn about how the industry is devel- oping and take a look at new technology that we'd want to buy for our department. The NAB conference occurs at the same time as the BEA (Broadcast Educators' As- sociation) convention. During this confer- ence, professors and students from all over the country meet to discuss the education- al aspects of our business and how new developments affect the educational world of mass media. But, we started at the NAB. The conference is set up in four gi- gantic conference halls, jammed full with television cameras, new software, switch- ers, satellite trucks, lighting equipment, computers, microphones and all kinds of fun stuff that would make any technology geek feel like he was in heaven. To look through everything in one day is just im- possible. We spoke to people who sold the things we were interested in, we got busi- ness cards, we shook hands and we met interesting people who all sold the best products out there. Later, during the BEA, we discussed whether it is ok to alter news footage to make a story more interesting; we discussed the new tapeless digital era; and we heard stories about other col- leges trying to start their own mass com- munications programs. Those days on the convention floor and in the discussion ses- sions were extremely interesting, but tiring. Of course, we had some time left over at night to hit the casinos and the famous Cirque du Soleil shows. I myself managed to not spend too much money on either Black Jack or Roulette. However, going to fancy restaurants quickly ate up my bud- get. But, it was a good mix with the daytime "work" at the convention with some more relaxing times at night. To- gether at night while eating sushi, we talked about what we had seen during the day and what we might be inter- ested in buying for our program. The nighttime hours weren't too bad either. My room at the Aladdin had a won- derful view of the strip, a huge bath- tub and a very soft king-size bed... In retrospect, it was a very inter- esting trip, and we have both bought things we saw at the convention and used some of our new knowledge to improve the program. The only dark moment was when Dr. Blakeslee left her favorite purse in the taxi and spent the rest of the night trying to get in con- tact with the taxi company. We never saw her purse again, but I'm sure she still thinks the trip was worth it! -Per Nyberg Las Vegas 1 1 Right: Meredith Ray pitches her way to | victory. This magnificent facility was made possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Lou- dermilk in honor of his grand- parents, Henry and Beulah Loudermilk, his father, and six aunts and uncles. The ballpark is design to remind fans of the clas- sic stadiums from baseball's golden age during the 1930s and '40s. It features covered seating as well as two bleacher ar- eas, a concession area, and indoor practice facilities. Being part of the golf pro- gram at Piedmont College is so amazing. Coming up from high school and starting in a program in college has been a little dif- ficult. There are so many things that are different and more chal- lenging. But there are also things in the program that make being on the college golf team much easier than in high school. The people on the golf team make going to practice worth- while. I am never judged and my teammates and Coach Glenn speak of my abilities very positively. Even after a bad shot they are encouraging. I am not used to that because people on my high school golf team were so judgmental that it made it hard for me to improve because all I could focus on was their negative comments. Here I feel like I can be myself and I don't have to prove myself to anyone. When we practice as a team I feel like Coach Glenn talks to us as a team even if he is talking to us individually. When he is helping another teammate or myself it is always helpful information that all of us can use. Maybe we can't use it at that moment, but eventually it will be used to improve our golfing abilities. These build morale on a team and make the individuals work together. -Sandi Tatum Women's Golf 21 1 Arrendale Libra ry Top Right: Nursing Student Polly Long uses the library for research. During his time at Piedmont Cooper picked up his nine hundredth and one thousandth wins. 152 In Memory Kathy Spiker Author unknown Kelly Coleman "Kathy truly reflected how a nurse should be - she was kind, generous, sensitive, and compassionate. Kathy 's character is a clear example that I want to strive towards. " Abbey Conkle "Kathy was one of the most compassionate and caring individuals I think I will ever know. She baked pumpkin bread for the entire nursing class at Christmas, she always shared her chewing gum with the class every day (that is a lot of gum), she always asked people how they were doing, and when they were not doing good she asked how she could help. She worked very hard in her schoolwork, showing how dedicated she was to become a nurse, and what a great nurse she would have been. Losing her was a tragic loss, but knowing her was a tremendous gain." Amanda Boling "Kathy was blessed with the gift of encouragement. Every life she touched was enhanced by her uplifting person- ality."
