This winged horse, Pegasus, is on the ironwork on the gates of Her-
mance Stadium.
As Pegasus represented immortality for the Romans, it represents to
us the undying spirit of Oglethorpe University.
1983
YAMACRAW
Stop. Take a look around. The key
word here is "look." That's what this
book was created for. You'll remember
that, in the past, we tended to place a lot
of emphasis on the printed word. There's
nothing wrong with that idea, but this
time around we've decided to do things a
little differently. When you think back
to your time at Oglethorpe and sooner
or later, you're likely to it's not words
you'll be thinking of, no matter what
your English professor might tell you.
You'll think, instead, of the people you
knew and the things you saw every
morning on your way to class. You'll
think of the buildings and the way the
classrooms looked.
Those are the things you'll be remem-
bering, and those are the things we'll be
showing you in these pages. Here are the
thousand and two images that grow out
of a year at O.U. the .activities, the
clubs and inductions, the professors, the
administrators, the bewildering variety
of students. We chose to present them
this way because we believe that a pic-
ture speaks more directly and eloquently
than copy like this ever can and because
we believe the pictures here need no ex-
planation. See for yourself.

The Yearbook of Oglethorpe University
3000 Woodrow Way^ N.E. Atlanta^ Georgia 30319
May 1983
Dear Reader,
"This place is ducking unbelievable." More apt words cannot be found to describe this office. The office and the people who inhabit it are nothing if they are not off tl
wall; yet somehow we've produced a yearbook and I believe it's a good one at that. There are several individuals who did so much that a part of them is bound into the boi
alongside with the pages.
Special thanks have to go to Nicki Brown who was not only an excellent photo editor (most of the time) but also had the strength to head the moral support staff despite
insurmountable obstacle (me). The faculty section and that awful headline in the soccer section owe their existence to Judy Hunt. Judy thanks for hanging in there and i,
there a chance for me to get that trailer in north Gwinnett anymore? The award for independence goes to Marty Eastlack. While most of us were concentrating on the coloil
pages Marty and a small staff completed the class section. Without her we probably never would have made our initial deadlines. In the "would you mind doing that cm
more time" department there was Anne Sams. How she put up with all the rescheduling problems we gave her is beyond me. Thanks Anne. Tim Bates deserves a thank yoi
for all the late nights he spent helping us make deadlines and for sticking it out.
A few thank-you's are overdue in the darkroom. The Dialated Pupil Award goes to Bucky Frank. If he hadn't closeted himself in the darkroom for hours and hours (and
hours and hours) a good portion of this book would never have been. Thanks go to Scott Haney for ANPP (I bet you're wondering what that means ask Scott). Scott alscl
played an important role on the moral support team (panks thai I owe you one). Last but most definitely not least is Larry Henson. able bodied photographer, all arount
great guy, and chief in charge of homework. He also figured prominently on the moral support group he doesn't get called son for nothing you know.
Over on the business staff, Dave Gerhardt deserves special mention. He took care of the ad campaign, and other business matters almost single handedly. Then there
Bill Tanner. If you ask him how much work he did on the Miss Yamacraw Pageant Lm sure he'll tell you nothing. In reality he organized rehearsals, staged the show and
made a large part of the pageant possible. Special thanks go to Seretha Masdon who stepped in just before the show and helped pull the whole thing off.
THE YAMACRAW has been fortunate enough to have several very special friends this year. Kevin Kincheloe stood by and let us borrow everything from photos to thi
office from the STORMY PETREL. Laura Anne Riley insists she didn't do anything for us but she took a whole bunch of pictures for this book. Art Williams, our publish-
ing representative, fits high up on our list of friends as does Dean Thames, our advisor. Last but not least, thanks go to Sue Bamford, Tim Bates, Nicki Brown, Larry Hen-
son, Sandra Lynch, and Laura Anne Riley. They were there at the end when this book was finished and because of them 1 got to go to bed at a reasonable hour.
There's no way this letter could express all the thank you's that are necessary. A pretty special bunch of people worked on this yearbook and I'm proud to call a lot of them
my friends.
Well, that's it. The 1983 Yamacraw is a reality, the office is clean and the staff has gone home. I hope you enjoy the book and you know something'? This place is ducking
unbelievable!

NCIT RINT
are hundreds of them afl^^^^empt at
capturing what it meant to spend this year
at Oglethorpe. We've tried to cover the
events that can be counted on to happen
each semester, the ones that were unique to
1982-83, and a few that might easily have
been overlooked if there hadn't been a Ya-
macraw photographer on hand to preserve
them for posterity.
There are some things about this past
year that we couldn't put here. There was
no room to include the weather, the news
events that were talked about in class or in
the Hearst lounge, or what was happening
" sports. More importantly, we found it
jwssible to convey with pictures some of
the things you'll probably find most impor-
tant about your time at Oglethorpe. We
couldn't for instance, find any way to pre-
serve memories of what you learned or the
things you felt or the friendships and fights
you had. The best we could do is give you
this record in pictures and hope that, in
looking back to it years from now, you'll be
reminded and find some way to fill in the
blanks yourself. And that's what a year-
book is supposed to do.
This winged horse, Pegasus, is on the ironwork on the gates of Her-
mance Stadium.
As Pegasus represented immortality for the Romans, it represents to
us the undying spirit of Oglethorpe University.
