This winged horse, Pegasus, is on the ironwork on the gates of Her- mance Stadium. As Pegasus represented immortality for the Romans, it represents to us the undying spirit of Oglethorpe University. 1983 YAMACRAW Stop. Take a look around. The key word here is "look." That's what this book was created for. You'll remember that, in the past, we tended to place a lot of emphasis on the printed word. There's nothing wrong with that idea, but this time around we've decided to do things a little differently. When you think back to your time at Oglethorpe and sooner or later, you're likely to it's not words you'll be thinking of, no matter what your English professor might tell you. You'll think, instead, of the people you knew and the things you saw every morning on your way to class. You'll think of the buildings and the way the classrooms looked. Those are the things you'll be remem- bering, and those are the things we'll be showing you in these pages. Here are the thousand and two images that grow out of a year at O.U. the .activities, the clubs and inductions, the professors, the administrators, the bewildering variety of students. We chose to present them this way because we believe that a pic- ture speaks more directly and eloquently than copy like this ever can and because we believe the pictures here need no ex- planation. See for yourself. ,r '"^ "idi ^Y~*^ v fffiwr*'' 9Ri 79 tfft^f^ j^pes-LOOKING'^IFEW GOOD M[ 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 o RGANIZATIONS 18 S PORTS E ACULTY C LASSES A C LOSING 60 98 130 DVERTISING 168 177 17 Or o GLETHORPE STUDENT ASSOCIATION v^' H ^ m M ^ (front row) Mary McGuire, Sophomore Class President; Tim Bates, Parliamentarian (second row) D.J. My family did not qualify for a need based grant and I was only able to come here because Og- lethorpe gave me the financial aid I needed." We've tried to cover the events that can be counted on to happen each semester, the ones that were unique to 1982-83, and a few that might easily have been overlooked if there hadn't been a Ya- macraw photographer on hand to preserve them for posterity. There are some things about this past year that we couldn't put here. There was no room to include the weather, the news events that were talked about in class or in the Hearst lounge, or what was happening " sports. More importantly, we found it jwssible to convey with pictures some of the things you'll probably find most impor- tant about your time at Oglethorpe. We couldn't for instance, find any way to pre- serve memories of what you learned or the things you felt or the friendships and fights you had. The best we could do is give you this record in pictures and hope that, in looking back to it years from now, you'll be reminded and find some way to fill in the blanks yourself. And that's what a year- book is supposed to do. This winged horse, Pegasus, is on the ironwork on the gates of Her- mance Stadium. As Pegasus represented immortality for the Romans, it represents to us the undying spirit of Oglethorpe University.
